Turnovers and Shooting Woes Plague Graceland in Loss to Eagles
LAMONI, Iowa— The Graceland University Yellowjackets women's basketball team endured a tough defeat against the Central Methodist Eagles on Saturday, falling 81-44 at the Morden Center. With the loss, the Yellowjackets drop to 2-10 overall and 0-8 in Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) play. Central Methodist improves to 6-7 overall and 3-6 in conference competition.
The Yellowjackets struggled to find their rhythm offensively, shooting just 29.1% from the field and going 0-for-17 from beyond the arc. Despite these challenges, Graceland made efforts at the free-throw line, converting 12-of-16 attempts (75%). Central Methodist capitalized on Graceland's 22 turnovers, scoring 25 points off miscues and outrebounding the Yellowjackets 47-34 to dominate the possession game.
Sophomore Kayloni Smolley led Graceland with 10 points and contributed three rebounds. Freshman Maxine Ampofo battled on the boards, pulling down a team-high nine rebounds while adding six points. Genesis Alarcon also made an impact defensively, tallying two steals and a block.
"Tonight's result was frustrating," said assistant coach Zach Moore. "We didn't execute in key moments, and turnovers really hurt us. But this team will not quit. We're committed to improving and fighting to win games despite the adversity we've faced this season."
Graceland started slowly, trailing 19-9 after the opening quarter. Central Methodist's aggressive defensive schemes forced early turnovers, allowing them to build momentum. The Eagles' Sharay Trotter was a key factor in the first half, tallying 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting.
Graceland showed brief flashes in the second quarter, highlighted by Smolley's eight points, but struggled to contain Central Methodist's ball movement, as the Eagles registered 17 assists on the night. By halftime, Graceland trailed 41-24.
The third quarter proved especially challenging for the Yellowjackets, as they were outscored 24-8. Central Methodist increased their defensive intensity, holding Graceland to 21.4% shooting in the frame. Graceland's inability to generate scoring opportunities from deep remained a key issue, with their three-point shooting woes extending throughout the contest.
Central Methodist sealed the win with balanced contributions from their bench, which added 37 points compared to Graceland's 20. Kaelyn Johnson led the Eagles with 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench, while Nautica Washington added nine points and three assists.
The Yellowjackets will aim to regroup when they host Park University on Monday, Dec. 16, at 12 p.m. at the Morden Center in Lamoni, Iowa.
