#22 Graceland Men Extend Win Streak to 11 with Road Victory at Culver-Stockton
CANTON, Mo. — The Graceland University men's basketball team resumed its season following the holiday layoff with a 74-58 Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) road win over Culver-Stockton College on Wednesday evening at Charles Field House. With the victory, Graceland improves to 13-2 overall and 7-0 in HAAC play, extending its winning streak to 11 games and remaining undefeated in league action.
Culver-Stockton fell to 3-12 overall and 0-7 in the conference.
"The first game back from break is always different," said Graceland head coach Todd Lorensen. "Combine the time away, weeks since the last games, newly available players for both teams — it just creates a lot of unique variables you don't have in most games. Proud of our group's resolve to get a conference road win."
Though Graceland struggled from the perimeter — converting just 3-of-19 (.158) from beyond the arc — the Yellowjackets controlled the paint and glass throughout the contest. Graceland outrebounded the Wildcats 52-27, leading to a 14-5 margin in second-chance points and a dominant 48-16 advantage in points in the paint.
Micah Lamberth led the way with a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double, his presence critical on both ends. He added three assists and one steal while going 7-of-12 from the field and collecting five offensive rebounds.
"It started with Micah's double-double," said Lorensen. "He's an everyday guy, which makes his on-court success all the more enjoyable."
In total, Graceland placed three scorers in double figures. Carson Busch finished with 16 points and went 5-of-6 at the free throw line. Runey Hernandez added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Tyson Shaw contributed nine points, including several key free throws down the stretch. Kaamil Domingo came off the bench to post six points and nine rebounds, adding needed physicality in a game where fouls and defensive execution were central.
Graceland jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the opening four minutes, powered by early threes from Hernandez and Busch. Despite a surge from the Wildcats that briefly trimmed the deficit to 14-15 midway through the first half, the Jackets responded with a 25-9 run to take a 39-24 halftime lead.
Culver-Stockton narrowed the gap early in the second half, cutting the lead to single digits at multiple points. But each time, Graceland answered with points in the paint, hustle plays, and timely rebounds.
"We talk a lot about winning games when shots don't fall or some things don't go our way," Lorensen added. "Today was that type of win. Despite shooting very poorly, we relied on our defense and second-chance opportunities."
Graceland shot 45.0 percent from the field overall but managed just 15.8 percent from three-point range and 58.6 percent from the free-throw line. Defensively, the Jackets held the Wildcats to 35.8 percent shooting, and only six made threes on 20 attempts.
The Yellowjackets' depth was evident, with 20 bench points matching the Wildcats' total. Defensively, GU forced 11 turnovers and limited Culver-Stockton to just five second-chance points.
Lorensen emphasized the need for continued improvement with league play resuming in full. "Similar to the first game of the year, we need to make some strides from game one to two after the break," he said. "Looking forward to a few great days of getting better and hitting the road on Wednesday for another league game."
