Graceland Women’s Basketball Secures Road Win Against Central Methodist

FAYETTE, Mo. — The Graceland University women's basketball team picked up a key conference victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Central Methodist University 83-61 on the road. The win improves the Yellowjackets to 8-14 overall and 6-12 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC), while Central Methodist falls to 7-16 overall and 4-15 in conference play.

Graceland controlled the tempo early, taking a 21-13 lead after the first quarter and maintaining a double-digit advantage through the remainder of the contest. The Yellowjackets shot 50.0% from the field (30-of-60), capitalizing on efficient inside scoring and transition play.

Senior guard Maxine Ampofo delivered a standout performance, posting a game-high 29 points on 11-of-17 shooting, including a perfect 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Ampofo also added six rebounds, three assists, and a steal, demonstrating an all-around game.

Head coach Willie Scott praised Ampofo's resilience following recent struggles:
"Huge win today! The team played aggressively and together—Maxine was unstoppable and well-deserved this after a few tough games. We also had a ton of assists, which speaks to our teamwork and execution."

Graceland's ball movement proved critical in the win, as the team registered 17 assists compared to Central Methodist's seven. Nateonia Russell contributed 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists, while Kymani Freeman added 13 points and four rebounds, knocking down two three-pointers.

The Yellowjackets controlled the interior, outscoring the Eagles 38-22 in the paint and forcing 18 turnovers that led to seven points off turnovers. Despite being out-rebounded 40-31, Graceland's defensive pressure limited Central Methodist to just 31.6% shooting from the field and 17.6% from three-point range.

Graceland built momentum in the second quarter, outscoring Central Methodist 26-15 to take a 47-28 halftime lead. The team continued to execute offensively in the second half, maintaining control and staving off any comeback attempts from the Eagles.

Central Methodist was led by Nautica Washington, who tallied 16 points and five rebounds, while Mary Copeland added 13 points and seven boards. However, the Eagles struggled to convert offensive opportunities, managing just 18-of-57 from the field.

The Yellowjackets return to action next Wednesday when they host Mount Mercy University at 5:30 p.m. in Lamoni, Iowa, at the Morden Center.
