Cole Bowen Erupts for 34 as Graceland Secures First Tournament Win Since 2018

HUNTINGTON, Ind. — The Graceland men's basketball team (26-6) secured its first win in the NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship since the program's 2018 national title run, defeating Lindsey Wilson (18-12) 83-72 in opening-round action Friday night at Platt Arena. The victory sends the No. 6-seeded Yellowjackets into the second round and marks a significant step forward for the program after falling in the opening round of the same pod one year ago.

Graceland built its win through efficient offensive execution, rebounding dominance and consistent trips to the free-throw line. The Yellowjackets finished 24-of-51 from the field (47.1%), outrebounded Lindsey Wilson 39-29, and converted 28-of-33 free throws in a physical postseason contest that featured 10 ties and nine lead changes.

At the center of the performance was Cole Bowen, who delivered a dominant all-around effort with 34 points and 16 rebounds, shooting 10-of-17 from the field, 4-of-7 from three-point range, and 10-of-13 from the free-throw line. The forward anchored Graceland's half-court offense while controlling the glass on both ends.

From the opening possessions, the Yellowjackets asserted their offensive rhythm. After Lindsey Wilson scored the first basket, Graceland responded quickly with perimeter shooting and paint production. Bowen opened his scoring with early free throws before knocking down a three-pointer to give Graceland a 7-4 lead. Moments later, Carson Busch added a jumper and Bowen connected again from deep as the Yellowjackets built momentum early in the first half.

Busch helped stretch the floor throughout the opening half, finishing with 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including two three-pointers and a perfect 6-for-6 performance at the foul line.

The early scoring burst helped Graceland establish a double-digit advantage midway through the half. Consecutive perimeter shots from Josh Sanderson and Busch pushed the lead to 20-6, forcing Lindsey Wilson to adjust defensively.

Head coach Todd Lorensen noted that the early offensive flow helped his team settle into the national tournament environment.

"It was nice to get off to a good start and get the jitters out of our system," Lorensen said.

However, Lindsey Wilson gradually worked its way back into the contest. Turnovers by the Yellowjackets allowed the Blue Raiders to generate transition opportunities and trim the deficit. A series of steals and quick baskets from Lindsey Wilson narrowed the margin late in the half.

Lorensen acknowledged that the defensive breakdowns and live-ball turnovers were a key factor in allowing the Blue Raiders to regain momentum.

"Unfortunately, we struggled with some simple defensive coverages that allowed them to get back into the game in the first half," Lorensen said. "We also had too many live-ball turnovers, which led to easy baskets for them on the other end."

Despite the push from Lindsey Wilson, Graceland regained control in the closing minutes of the half. Bowen delivered a pivotal sequence with a dunk, a free throw and multiple rebounds, while Busch added a late jumper to help the Yellowjackets enter halftime with a 41-38 lead.

The opening minutes of the second half saw Lindsey Wilson briefly tie the game at 41-41 following a three-pointer from DJ Gordon, setting up a competitive stretch that featured multiple lead changes.

Graceland responded by returning to its half-court structure and emphasizing defensive discipline. The Yellowjackets tightened their perimeter defense and focused on limiting dribble penetration, which helped slow the Blue Raiders' offensive rhythm.

Lorensen pointed to that defensive adjustment as a turning point in the game.

"One positive was that we were able to settle in defensively and play more half-court man-to-man," Lorensen said. "That helped address one of our biggest issues and was a significant factor for us in the second half."

As the second half progressed, Bowen continued to anchor the offense. The forward knocked down another three-pointer midway through the period to tie the game at 49-49, before attacking the rim and converting key free throws during a pivotal scoring stretch.

His production extended beyond scoring, as Bowen consistently created opportunities for teammates when Lindsey Wilson sent additional defenders toward the paint.

"Cole was dynamic on both ends of the floor," Lorensen said. "They put their big on him, which gave him some clean looks from three, and that's a shot we feel very confident in him knocking down."

Graceland also received valuable contributions from its supporting rotation during the second half. Kaamil Domingo provided energy on the glass and helped extend possessions during key stretches.

"Kaamil gave us big minutes in the second half," Lorensen said. "He's struggled a little lately and his minutes have been reduced, but it was great to see him step up in such a big moment for our team."

The win marks Graceland's first NAIA national tournament victory since the program won the 2018 NAIA National Championship over LSU Alexandria.

Graceland will return to action Saturday evening when the Yellowjackets face Bellevue University (NE) in the second round of the NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Eastern Time (5 p.m. Central Time), with the winner advancing to Kansas City and the NAIA Round of 16.
