Heart Title Game Goes to Overtime as William Penn Edges Graceland 95-90

LAMONI, IowaTop-seeded Graceland University battled to the final possession before falling 95-90 in overtime to William Penn in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament championship game Monday night at the Morden Center. Graceland moves to 25-6 overall (17-3 Heart), while William Penn improves to 25-6 overall (16-4 Heart).

Despite the setback, Graceland secures the Heart's automatic berth to the NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship after winning the outright regular-season conference title for the first time in program history.

Monday's championship contest mirrored the previous two matchups between the programs this season — all three decided in the final possession or two. The game featured six ties and six lead changes and required overtime after neither side could convert in the closing seconds of regulation.

Graceland established tempo early in the championship matchup. Micah Lamberth opened the scoring with a 3-point field goal on the first possession, and the Yellowjackets built a double-digit first-half advantage behind efficient half-court execution and paint production.

The Yellowjackets shot 53.6 percent from the field in the first half (15-of-28) and connected on 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, carrying a 46-39 lead into halftime. Graceland controlled spacing and interior positioning, generating high-percentage looks while limiting transition opportunities.

Cole Bowen anchored the opening half with 13 points and seven rebounds. Carson Busch added four first-half assists, finiding his spots from the perimeter and getting down hill consistently. Josh Sanderson provided scoring from the wing to stretch William Penn's defense.

William Penn responded in the second half by attacking the rim and dominating the offensive glass. The Statesmen finished with a decisive 46-33 rebounding advantage, including 16 offensive rebounds, which proved pivotal in a five-point overtime contest.

Graceland maintained offensive efficiency throughout the game, shooting 43.5 percent overall (27-of-62) and 40.0 percent from three-point range (8-of-20). The Yellowjackets recorded 13 assists and committed just nine turnovers during the contest. They also converted 12 Statesmen turnovers into 17 points.

Bowen delivered a 27-point, 12-rebound double-double, finishing through contact and drawing fouls in the lane. Micah Lamberth added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Deundra Roberson contributed 13 points and two steals. Trey Summers provided 10 points off the bench, converting 8-of-10 from the free-throw line.

In the final minute of regulation, Graceland executed in the paint and at the stripe to tie the game at 80-80. The Yellowjackets generated two late paint touches but were unable to convert before the horn on Bowen jumper from the right block, sending the Heart championship into overtime.

William Penn capitalized in the extra session, outscoring Graceland 15-10 in overtime and converting key free throws down the stretch. The Statesmen finished the night 31-of-41 at the line (75.6 percent).

Malik Larane led William Penn with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Alif Bass added 22 points.

The loss marks Graceland's third narrow defeat to William Penn this season, with each contest coming down to late-game execution.

Monday's championship appearance capped a dominant conference tournament run for the Yellowjackets. As the No. 1 seed, Graceland opened tournament play with a commanding quarterfinal victory over No. 8 seed Peru State in the 1-vs.-8 matchup. The Yellowjackets followed with a decisive 79-55 semifinal win over No. 5 seed Central Methodist, advancing to the championship game for the first time as hosts since 2018. Last season, the Jackets lost in the championship on the road in Baldwin City, Kansas against Baker.

Graceland enters national tournament play having won seven of its last nine contests and securing the program's first outright Heart regular-season championship.

Head men's basketball coach Todd Lorensen emphasized the competitive environment and preparation moving forward.

"I'm really proud of our team and hurt for our guys," Lorensen said. "There are always going to be things we would like to have done better but our guys competed at a high level."

"This game had the feel, intensity and physicality of a national tournament game so it will have us well prepared for that."

"It's been a long 10 days with game, two-day preps, game again and again. We need to take a few days to unwind mentally and physically."

"We are excited to find who and where we are playing on Thursday during the selection show and then will put all of our effort and energy toward preparing for that."

Graceland will now await the announcement of the NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship field on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT, streamed live on YouTube. The Yellowjackets will learn their seed, opponent and site location during the selection show before preparing for the opening round of national tournament play.
