GU Edges Closer to Outright Conference Championship, Strengthens Grip on No. 1 Seed

LAMONI, IowaThe Graceland men's basketball team took a significant step toward securing the program's first outright Heart of America Athletic Conference championship with a 85-77 victory over Grand View on Wednesday night at the Morden Center.

With the win, Graceland improves its position atop the Heart standings and remains in control of its path to the No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The Yellowjackets now turn their attention to Saturday's regular-season finale with championship implications on the line.

Grand View entered the contest at 21-7 overall and 18-2 in conference play, while Graceland continued its late-season push in Heart competition. The Yellowjackets executed in critical stretches, using timely scoring runs and defensive stops to pull away from the Vikings late in the game.

Graceland was outstanding in its shot selection for most of the contest and controlled the pace of play for 40 minutes behind another dominant performance from Cole Bowen. Behind penetration from the backcourt and smart interior play, the Jackets converted high-percentage opportunities around the rim and capitalized in transition, turning defensive stops into offensive production. After the Vikings had cut the lead to one in the second half, the Jackets responded with a decisive 12-3 run that put GU ahead for good.

"This was a battle of two really good basketball teams, and fortunately, we made the last run of the game in combination with a few late stops to earn the victory," head coach Todd Lorensen said. "Cole was incredible and showed why he was the player of the year in the league last year. He played with tremendous balance around the rim, and when he does that, he's almost impossible to stop.

"They did a good job of limiting Carson's attempts, but he was super-efficient on the offensive end. We've challenged a few guys to play with more energy, and I thought both Kaamil Domingo and Trey Summers used that extra effort to get additional possessions in very key moments tonight," continued Lorensen.

"It's exciting to be playing in a game on the last day of the regular season with the significance that this one does. There's a lot on the line, but we are excited for a great couple of days of prep and hopefully a great atmosphere on Saturday."

Cole's interior presence set the tone offensively, as he consistently established deep post position and finished through contact. His footwork and balance in the paint forced defensive rotations and opened perimeter opportunities all night for us." concluded Lorensen.

Carson delivered an efficient offensive performance despite defensive pressure, converting his scoring opportunities within the flow of the offense. Graceland's spacing and ball movement allowed the Yellowjackets to maintain rhythm even when primary options were limited.

The Jackets also received impactful minutes from Kaamil Domingo and Trey Summers. Both provided energy plays that shifted momentum, including offensive rebounds, loose-ball recoveries and defensive stops that extended possessions during pivotal stretches.

Graceland emphasized defensive discipline and rebounding margin in preparation, and that emphasis showed in key moments. Late-game stops, coupled with controlled tempo and clock management, enabled the Jackets to close the contest without allowing a sustained response.

With the postseason approaching, the victory positions Graceland one step away from capturing its first-ever outright conference championship and securing the top seed in the Heart tournament. The Jackets control their destiny entering the final day of regular-season play.

Graceland returns to action Saturday, Feb. 21, at 4 p.m. CST against Baker (Kan.) at the Morden Center in Lamoni, Iowa. The contest will serve as Senior Day and carries direct implications for the conference championship race.
