Graceland Falls on Road to Missouri Baptist, Conference Lead Narrows
ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Graceland University men's basketball team dropped a 75-67 decision to Missouri Baptist on Saturday afternoon at the Petty SRC. With the loss, Graceland moves to 21-5 overall and 15-3 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play, while Missouri Baptist improves to 17-9 overall and 11-7 in conference.
The setback carries major implications in the Heart of America Athletic Conference title race. Graceland entered the matchup in sole possession of first place and had previously handled the Spartans, 79–66, in mid-December. Despite suffering two conference losses to William Penn, the Yellowjackets maintained their grip atop the standings, fending off pressure for much of league play.
Saturday's loss, however, significantly tightens the race. With just two regular-season conference games remaining, Graceland's lead over the Statesmen is down to one game — and effectively even slimmer. William Penn holds the head-to-head tiebreaker after sweeping the regular-season series, meaning the margin atop the standings is razor thin entering the final week.
There is, however, another layer to the race. Graceland remains No. 1 in the Heart's Point Rating System (PRS) at 4.28 (Feb. 9 release), with William Penn the only other team above 4.0 at 4.13. The metric further underscores how tightly contested the race has become. The Heart men's basketball conference tournament particpants and seeding will be determined by the PRS poll, and not your position in the conference standings due to the unbalanced schedule now played by all schools.
Still, the path remains clear for the Yellowjackets. Graceland controls its own destiny — win out, and the program will capture the outright Heart men's basketball title for the first time in school history. Despite the stumble, the opportunity for a historic finish remains firmly within reach.
Graceland shot 44.4 percent from the field (24-of-54) but struggled from the perimeter at 24.1 percent (7-of-29) and converted 12-of-23 free throws (52.2 percent). Missouri Baptist shot 40.9 percent from the floor and held a 43-35 rebounding edge. The Spartans also turned 12 Graceland turnovers into 15 points and received 25 bench points.
Cole Bowen led Graceland with 19 points and eight rebounds in 40 minutes, finishing 6-of-11 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Bowen added four assists in a high-usage role.
Deundra Roberson scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Micah Lamberth contributed 13 points on 6-of-7 from the field and six rebounds. Josh Sanderson added eight points, including two 3-point field goals.
The contest featured six ties and seven lead changes. Graceland led by as many as six points in the first half and took a 32-28 advantage after a 3-point field goal from Bowen with 6:20 remaining in the period. Missouri Baptist closed the half on a 6-0 run to take a 34-32 lead into the break.
In the second half, Missouri Baptist built an eight-point margin midway through the period behind interior scoring and second-chance opportunities. Graceland trimmed the deficit to three points with 3:58 remaining after a Bowen layup, but the Yellowjackets were unable to convert key possessions down the stretch.
The Spartans finished 16-of-21 at the free-throw line, including 13-of-18 in the second half. Graceland's inability to match that efficiency at the stripe proved decisive in a game decided by single-digit possessions.
Graceland closes the regular season with two home games at the Morden Center, beginning Wednesday against a Grand View team currently third in the Heart standings. The Yellowjackets conclude the regular season next Saturday on Senior Day against defending regular-season and conference tournament champion Baker University. Graceland edged the Wildcats 92-91 in overtime in Baldwin City in January.
Graceland returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Lamoni, Iowa, at the Morden Center.
