No. 21 Yellowjackets Clamp Down Defensively, Defeat Benedictine as Bowen Returns
LAMONI, Iowa — The Graceland University Yellowjackets men's basketball team turned in a complete performance Saturday afternoon inside the Morden Center, securing a 72-49 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over Benedictine College (Kan.). The win moved Graceland to 20-4 overall and 14-2 in conference play, while Benedictine fell to 13-11 overall and 9-7 in the Heart.
The result carried significant implications in the conference race, as Graceland regained a two-game lead atop the Heart standings following William Penn's home loss to Grand View earlier in the week. With the Yellowjackets now at 14-2 and the Statesmen at 12-4, the margin is especially meaningful given that William Penn swept the regular-season series and holds the tiebreaker. As a result, Graceland's lead now represents a clearer advantage heading into the final stretch of league play.
Graceland overcame a slow offensive start before asserting control through defensive pressure and execution on both ends of the floor. Benedictine scored the game's first points and briefly dictated tempo early, but the Yellowjackets settled in defensively and closed the opening half on a sustained run, taking a 40-27 lead into intermission. From there, Graceland limited the Ravens to 22 second-half points, holding Benedictine to 26.9 percent shooting after halftime and 16.7 percent from three-point range for the game.
"After the slow start in the first eight minutes or so we were incredible on the defensive end and made everything they got extremely challenging," head coach Todd Lorensen said. "Our balance offensively was great, which continues to be a strength for this team."
That balance was evident throughout the box score. Graceland finished with 15 assists on 24 made field goals, committed just nine turnovers, and controlled the glass with a 36-21 rebounding advantage. The Yellowjackets also converted 14-of-16 from the free-throw line, consistently turning defensive stops into efficient scoring opportunities.
Saturday also marked the return of Cole Bowen, the reigning Heart of America Player of the Year, who made his first appearance in nine games after recovering from a knee injury. Bowen delivered an immediate impact, finishing with 18 points, 13 rebounds and four assists, while anchoring Graceland's interior defense and facilitating offensive flow.
"It was great to see him back out there doing what he works so hard to be great at," Lorensen said. "He's respected by everyone in the locker room and is obviously very productive on the court. I thought he might be a little bit rusty, but he definitely wasn't and it was great to have him out there."
Bowen's presence provided stability during key stretches of the game, particularly as Graceland worked through early offensive possessions. His ability to rebound, score through contact and distribute from the post allowed the Yellowjackets to maintain spacing and tempo, while also strengthening their defensive rebounding.
Graceland complemented Bowen's return with efficient perimeter and transition play. Micah Lamberth led all scorers with 20 points, shooting 8-of-9 from the field while adding three steals and guarding multiple positions. Lamberth consistently generated scoring opportunities by attacking gaps in the defense and finishing at the rim.
"Micah continues to find ways to get easy baskets at the rim, and his flexibility to play multiple positions defensively is a huge asset," Lorensen said. "He's had back-to-back really good games and we hope that continues."
The Yellowjackets also received steady contributions from the perimeter. Josh Sanderson connected on four three-pointers, finishing with 15 points, while Carson Busch added eight points and four assists, helping initiate offense and maintain ball movement. Graceland shot 29.4 percent from three-point range, but consistently generated quality looks through penetration and drive-and-kick action.
"Offensively, I thought we manufactured a lot of really good opportunities that didn't necessarily result in points on the scoreboard," Lorensen said. "But if we continue to do that, there will be nights where we really score it."
Defensively, Graceland limited Benedictine's efficiency across the floor. The Ravens finished with just five assists, were held to 22 points in the paint, and managed only two second-chance points. Graceland's rotations remained disciplined throughout the contest, forcing contested shots late in the shot clock and eliminating transition chances.
By the final media timeout, the Yellowjackets had built a 25-point lead, allowing Lorensen to manage rotations while maintaining defensive intensity. Graceland closed the game without surrendering a run, securing its fifth win in the last seven games and maintaining momentum atop the Heart standings.
Graceland will return to action Wednesday, Feb. 11, as the Yellowjackets continue Heart of America Athletic Conference play on the road at Mount Mercy. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST inside the Hennessey Recreation Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as Graceland looks to build on Saturday's performance and maintain its position atop the conference standings.
