No. 20 Graceland Falls at the Buzzer in First Conference Loss of the Season, 85-83

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – The No. 20-ranked Graceland Yellowjackets (15-3, 9-1 Heart) saw their 13-game winning streak snapped in dramatic fashion on the road Wednesday night, falling 85-83 to William Penn (13-5, 7-3 Heart) after surrendering a game-winning jumper at the buzzer.

The Yellowjackets, who were looking for their tenth consecutive conference win, battled wire-to-wire in what head coach Todd Lorensen described as "a great small college basketball game that had a championship-level environment."

Tied at 83 with less than 10 seconds to play, Graceland executed two strong initial defensive stands, but failed to secure the rebound on consecutive missed attempts by the Statesmen. William Penn's Alif Bass capitalized on the third chance, collecting the offensive board and hitting a pull-up jumper just inside the free-throw line as time expired to stun the Yellowjackets and the visitors' bench.

"This was a great small college basketball game," Lorensen said. "Unfortunately, we fell on the wrong side of it on a last-second shot. Our initial defense was great, but we failed to rebound twice. Our inability to take care of the ball and defensive rebound was the difference in the game."

Despite the loss, Graceland put together one of its most efficient offensive performances of the season, shooting 59.2 percent from the field, including 53.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Yellowjackets built scoring balance behind Tyson Shaw's 18 points, Runey Hernandez's 13, and Josh Sanderson's 14, with four players reaching double figures and 36 total bench points.

However, the Yellowjackets' efficiency was undermined by 18 turnovers, compared to just nine by the Statesmen. William Penn converted those giveaways into 17 points off turnovers, swinging the momentum in key stretches.

Adding to the missed chances, Graceland struggled at the line, converting just 17-of-28 free throws (60.7%), with crucial misses in both halves. "Even with the rebounding and turnovers, if we had been better at the free-throw line, we still could have left with a win," said Lorensen.

Though Graceland held a 35-30 rebounding edge overall, it was the final possession that underscored the game's difference. Second-chance points favored Graceland 21-10, but the Yellowjackets couldn't secure the one board that mattered most in the game's closing seconds.

Off the bench, Kaamil Domingo posted a strong effort with six points, seven rebounds, and a perfect 4-for-4 mark at the stripe. Emarion Ellis added 10 points and three boards, playing significant minutes down the stretch.

Defensively, Graceland limited William Penn to just 43.5 percent shooting and 40 percent from three-point range, but allowed key offensive rebounds late. Bass led the Statesmen with 20 points, while Javion Belle-McCrary and Malik Larane added 18 and 15, respectively.

The loss marks Graceland's first Heart Conference setback of the season, bringing their record to 9-1 in league play. The Yellowjackets had just climbed to No. 20 in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, released earlier Wednesday, moving up two spots from the previous ranking.

William Penn, who entered the night with a 6-3 conference mark, improved to 7-3 in Heart play and notched a major win for its postseason resume.

Despite the disappointment, Lorensen praised his team's fight and remains confident in its trajectory. "There's no doubt in my mind that we'll learn from this. We played well enough to win in a lot of ways, but against great teams, you have to execute every possession."

Graceland will look to regroup quickly as they head back on the road for another key Heart contest. The Yellowjackets travel to Baldwin City to take on Baker University on Saturday, Jan. 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. CST at the Collins Center.
