Yellowjackets Compete at No. 2 Grand View in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Graceland University women's wrestling team faced a significant test on January 29, competing on the road against No. 2-ranked Grand View University at the Vikings Event Center in Des Moines. The host Vikings secured a 43-0 victory in the dual, but the final score did not fully reflect the competitive demands and resilience shown by the Yellowjackets throughout the matchup.

Graceland entered the dual shorthanded and navigated a lineup that featured multiple nationally ranked and experienced opponents. The Yellowjackets were forced into several forfeits across the upper and middle weights, while Grand View capitalized with bonus-point victories, including technical falls at 103 and 131 pounds and falls at 117 and 138.

At 103 pounds, Addison Obrecht battled through a fast-paced opening bout that ended in a technical fall for the Vikings. Graceland also saw action from Amaris Rivera at 117 and Ilee Basaldua at 138, both gaining valuable mat time against elite competition in early-stoppage matches. Despite the margin, the dual served as a critical data point as the Yellowjackets continue to evaluate lineup depth, conditioning, and match readiness against top-tier NAIA programs.

Head men's and women's wrestling coach Evan Hansen emphasized the context of the result following the dual. "Grand View is ranked No. 2 in the country for a reason," Hansen said. "The score doesn't show it, but our kids competed with effort and resiliency. We were tested in every position, and that experience matters as we keep building and preparing for the highest level of competition."

Graceland will quickly turn its focus to one of the premier events on its schedule, facing another deep field of national talent next week. The Yellowjackets are set to compete at the Grand View Open on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 9:00 a.m. CST, hosted at the Viking Event Center in Des Moines, Iowa, an event expected to draw many of the top collegiate wrestlers in the region.
