Graceland Volleyball Drops 3–1 Decision to William Woods Despite Strong Start

LAMONI, Iowa — The Graceland University Yellowjackets women's volleyball team opened conference play Friday evening with a competitive four-set match against William Woods University, ultimately falling 3–1 (25–22, 17–25, 10–25, 26–28) at the Lamoni-based Morden Center.

With the loss, Graceland moves to 4–8 overall and 0–1 in Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) play, while William Woods improves to 8–2 on the season and 1–0 in the conference.

The Yellowjackets came out aggressive in the opening set, executing a balanced offensive scheme and delivering a consistent serve game to edge the Owls 25–22. Graceland posted 11 kills and only 4 errors in the first set, good for a .259 team hitting percentage. Sophomore Kaylee Baker led the charge with several timely attacks, finishing the night with 9 kills on 23 swings (.304).

Graceland's block and serve execution were particularly effective in the opening frame, as the Yellowjackets forced multiple errors from the Owls and maintained a +3 differential in service aces in the first set alone.

"We delivered," head coach Stew McDole said. "I don't think Woods came expecting a battle. They got a battle. I don't think they expected the aggressive quality of serve that we delivered. We delivered. They have some special tools. They were a challenge and fun to play. They saw us play two weeks ago. I am sure they were surprised at who we were and who we are."

However, William Woods quickly responded in the second and third sets, tightening its offensive efficiency and applying pressure from the service line. The Owls turned in a .179 hitting percentage in Set 2 and an explosive .733 mark in Set 3, led by Luciana Paiva Pereira's 21-kill performance on .514 hitting. Graceland struggled to terminate rallies in the middle frames, posting negative hitting in the third set with 7 kills and 8 errors on 19 attempts (-.053).

Despite the mid-match stumble, the Yellowjackets rallied in Set 4. Graceland extended the final frame past 25 points, holding a late 22–20 lead before William Woods capitalized on three straight attack errors and reclaimed momentum. The set featured six ties in the final 10 points, including a 24–24 deadlock, but William Woods sealed the match with back-to-back kills by Lorenza Lagana.

On the night, Graceland hit .106 as a team, while holding the Owls to a .261 clip. Sophomore Grace Jensen recorded 7 kills, 15 digs, and a service ace, while freshman Kariana Hernandez Cruz posted 18 assists and two service aces. Middle blocker Kylee Dixon was efficient at the net, tallying 3 block assists and 3 kills on 7 attempts (.429).

Graceland's defense posted 36 digs, led by Jensen and Kariana Hernandez Cruz, and the team totaled 8 block assists, staying active at the net despite the offensive firepower from the Owls.

William Woods controlled the assist category, led by setter Erin Treis' 31 assists, and pressured the Yellowjackets' serve receive with 7 service aces.

The Yellowjackets committed 8 service errors and were unable to capitalize on several extended rallies, particularly late in Sets 2 and 4. Graceland also struggled in transition after first contact, managing just 36 kills to William Woods' 49.

Graceland now turns its attention to a nationally ranked opponent tomorrow morning.

The Yellowjackets return to the court Saturday at 11 a.m. against No. 10 Missouri Baptist. The match will be held at the Morden Center in Lamoni.
