Graceland Women's Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets to Baker University
LAMONI, Iowa — The Graceland University Yellowjackets fell to the Baker University Wildcats in straight sets (23-25, 22-25, 21-25) on Friday night in an intense Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) matchup at the Morden Center. Despite the hard-fought effort, Graceland was unable to secure a win and now holds a 1-18 record on the season, with a 0-10 mark in conference play.
Graceland opened the first set strong, establishing an early lead behind the attacking prowess of Brenna Crabtree, who finished the match with a team-high 13 kills on 27 attempts and a .370 hitting percentage. The Yellowjackets built a narrow lead, capitalizing on Baker's attack errors. However, the Wildcats clawed their way back, led by Aby Widhalm's 14 kills and a .345 hitting percentage, tying the score at 23-23. A crucial service error by the Yellowjackets allowed Baker to capture the set, 25-23.
In the second set, Graceland found themselves trailing early as Baker's offense began to find its rhythm. Baker executed strong serves and blocking, with Alyssa Champane recording 16 assists and two service aces. The Yellowjackets managed to stay within striking distance, thanks to the consistent play from setter Hailey Kauweloa, who tallied 14 assists, and some timely kills from Grace Jensen, who contributed seven kills across 25 attempts. Yet, Baker's pressure proved too much as they took the second set, 25-22.
The third set followed a similar pattern, with both teams exchanging points early. Graceland's defensive play, led by libero Shelby Jabour's 18 digs, kept them in contention, but errors on both the serve and the attack ultimately hampered their efforts. Baker pulled away late in the set, fueled by strong play from Kylie Murray and Meredith Brown at the net. Despite Graceland's late push to reduce the deficit, the Wildcats closed out the match with a 25-21 victory, sweeping the Yellowjackets.
Head Coach Stew McDole reflected on the outcome, stating, "Life in our conference is a struggle. We played good enough tonight to sweep and came away swept. We keep moving forward and we keep fighting every night. That's all I can ask for."
Graceland showed glimpses of potential throughout the match, but unforced errors, including 13 service errors and 18 attack errors, made it difficult for them to sustain momentum. The Yellowjackets also struggled with consistency on serve receive, allowing Baker to register nine service aces over the course of the match.
On the opposing side, Baker executed well under pressure, with strong performances across the board. Aby Widhalm and Kaitlyn Stout both recorded impressive kill totals, combining for 22 kills. Setter Taryn Dial's efficient play facilitated the Wildcats' offense, as she dished out 11 assists to complement her two kills. Defensively, Baker's ability to block at the net proved to be a critical factor, with six blocks in total.
The loss extends Graceland's tough conference run, but the team remains determined to keep battling through the schedule. The Yellowjackets will have little time to regroup as they return to action tomorrow afternoon, hosting MidAmerica Nazarene University at 2 p.m. inside the Morden Center.
Despite the setbacks, the Yellowjackets' resilience and competitive spirit remain evident as they continue to develop and seek their first conference win of the season.
