Grand View Prevails in Four Over Yellowjackets

LAMONI - Graceland volleyball hosted #7 Grand View University last night and fell in four sets.

The Yellowjackets saw themselves arguably play their best set of the season in the opener last night versus the #7 Vikings. Two kills from Shianne Cook and one from Jasmine Fonoti, all off of assists from Sam Schell, helped boost Graceland to a great start. An early 8-1 Yellowjacket lead forced a Grand View timeout. After coming back to tie the set at 11, Graceland would score the next three points with one of them being an Abby Karlis service ace. Late in the set, Karlis would then assist on the final two points. A kill from Brenna Murphy followed by a kill from Emma Runyan would end set one and give the Yellowjackets a 25-20 win.

Cook would again get the first point in set two as Graceland held an early lead. Grand View would eventually go on a 10-3 run later in the set to help them pull away. The Vikings would even things up by taking set two 25-16.

In set three, both teams were back-and-forth early as the score was tied at six. The Vikings used a 5-point run to force a Graceland timeout. Grand View would go ahead by as many as nine points in the set. Late, Graceland was able to close the gap to three, but not get any closer. Grand View took the third set 25-18.

Graceland would hold an early 5-3 lead in the fourth set, but it would diminish quickly. Grand View would score the next six points to force a timeout for the Yellowjackets. Coming out of the timeout, Runyan had a cross-court kill bring Graceland within 3 points. Grand View was able to stop the Graceland comeback and eventually take an 11-point lead. The Vikings won set four 25-15 to take the match.

The volleyball team's next matches will be in the Graceland Triangular held Saturday, October 5th at 1 and 5 pm. The Yellowjackets will face conference foe Peru State at 1 pm, then play again at 5 pm versus Haskell Indians University.
