Graceland Battles to 0–0 Draw with Missouri Baptist in Homecoming Match

LAMONI, Iowa – The Graceland University Yellowjackets women's soccer team dominated possession and outshot Missouri Baptist University 24–6, but neither side could find a breakthrough as the annual Homecoming match ended in a 0–0 draw Saturday afternoon at Rasmussen Sports Complex.

The result moves Graceland to 4–4–2 overall and 1–3–1 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play, while Missouri Baptist sits at 3–7–1 overall and 3–3 in the HAAC. Despite the scoreline, Graceland's performance reflected strong tactical organization and offensive intent, particularly in midfield control and final-third pressure.

First Half: Yellowjackets Control Tempo

From the opening whistle, Graceland established control through sustained possession and quick passing sequences. The Yellowjackets generated several early chances, with Mariam El Mir Tartou (Rabat, Morocco) and Chloe Montera (San Diego, Calif.) combining to test Missouri Baptist goalkeeper Jordyn Maryas within the first four minutes.

Graceland's best opportunity of the half came in the 21st minute when Montera drove a low shot toward the far post, forcing one of Maryas' 12 total saves. Tessa Cook (Moline, Ill.) and Sierra Flores (El Paso, Texas) added attempts just wide of frame, keeping constant pressure on the Spartan back line.

By halftime, Graceland had recorded a 12–3 advantage in total shots and held nearly 70 percent of possession. The defensive unit, anchored by senior goalkeeper Alexia Johnson (Kansas City, Mo.), kept Missouri Baptist without a shot on goal in the final 25 minutes of the first half.

Second Half: Attacking Persistence, Defensive Resilience

Graceland maintained its shape and tempo after the break, continuing to dictate play through El Mir Tartou, Montera, and Caitlin Lageman (Kansas City, Mo.) in midfield. The Yellowjackets earned four corners and produced multiple dangerous sequences, including a pair of headers from Wissal Rafik (Casablanca, Morocco) and Jordan Dingman (Lamoni, Iowa) that were turned aside by Maryas.

Montera led all players with nine shots, five of which were on goal, while El Mir Tartou added four attempts and Lageman contributed three. Graceland generated 12 shots on target to Missouri Baptist's two, but Maryas' performance in net kept the visitors level.

Defensively, the Yellowjackets remained compact and organized. Johnson recorded two saves in 90 minutes, securing her third clean sheet of the season. Mackenzie Ralston (Des Moines, Iowa) and Addison Fletcher (Lenexa, Kan.) held strong along the back line, limiting the Spartans to speculative long-range efforts.

Missouri Baptist's best look came in the 63rd minute on a shot from Kacey Watson, but Johnson reacted quickly to preserve the scoreless draw.

Coach Randall Porter's Reaction

Following the match, Head Coach Randall Porter emphasized the positives in his team's control of play while noting the need for sharper finishing in front of goal.

"We dictated tempo and created more than enough opportunities to win," Porter said. "Our ball movement was excellent, and the effort from our group was outstanding. We just need to convert those moments in the final third into goals."

Porter also praised his team's defensive discipline and composure.

"Another clean sheet shows the growth of our back line and how connected this team has become," he added. "Alexia was strong in goal again, and our defenders communicated and covered space well. These are the kind of performances we can build from as we move deeper into conference play."

At 1–3–1 in HAAC play, the Yellowjackets remain within reach of postseason contention. Graceland's defensive consistency and offensive depth—highlighted by 12 shots on goal from six different players—signal progress heading into the midseason stretch.

Looking Ahead

The Graceland University Yellowjackets return to Rasmussen Sports Complex on Wednesday, October 8, hosting Park University in another key Heart of America Athletic Conference match. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. CDT.

With Homecoming now behind them, the Yellowjackets will look to convert their attacking volume into results as they continue conference play at home.
