LAMONI, Iowa — SThe Graceland University women's soccer team posted a 3-1 win over Hannibal-LaGrange University on Friday afternoon at Armstrong Field, improving its overall record to 3-1-1 heading into Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) play. Hannibal-LaGrange fell to 0-4 (0-0 HAAC) with the result.

Midfielder Chloe Montera scored a first-half hat trick, leading the Yellowjackets to a decisive early advantage before the match settled in during the second half. Graceland dominated the shot column with a 21-4 advantage, including 14 shots on goal.

"We executed the game plan well in the opening half," said head coach Randall Porter. "We were intentional in the attacking third, and that allowed us to control the match early. We'll need to carry that sharpness into conference play."

Match Summary

Graceland wasted little time putting pressure on the Trojans' back line. After a pair of early corner kicks, Chloe Montera opened the scoring in the 8th minute, finishing off an assist from Nuria Garcia following sustained pressure in the penalty area.

Less than a minute later, Montera struck again, this time capitalizing on a delivery from Wissal Rafik to make it 2-0. The quick sequence marked the Yellowjackets' fastest back-to-back goals of the season.

In the 28th minute, Montera completed her hat trick, latching onto a pass from Tessa Cook and sending a right-footed strike past the keeper to extend the lead to 3-0. It was Montera's first collegiate hat trick, and she became the second Graceland player to record three goals in a match this season.

Graceland held a commanding 14-0 advantage in shots at the break and forced Hannibal-LaGrange goalkeeper Kylee Gundaker into seven first-half saves.

In the second half, Graceland rotated personnel and maintained possession, though the Trojans began to generate limited attacking moments. In the 82nd minute, Isabella Claro scored for the visitors on a solo effort, pulling one goal back to close the final margin at 3-1.

Team Statistics

The Yellowjackets finished with 21 total shots, 14 on goal, and earned seven corner kicks across 90 minutes. Graceland's attacking momentum was supported by Chloe Montera (4 shots, 3 on goal, 3 goals), Tessa Cook (3 shots, 2 on goal, 1 assist), and Caitlin Lageman (3 shots, all on frame).

Hannibal-LaGrange was limited to just four total shots, three on frame, with Claro scoring their only goal. The Trojans did not register a shot in the first half.

Graceland's goalkeeping duties were split between Alexis Porter, who played the first half, and Alexia Johnson, who completed the second. Porter recorded two saves in her 45 minutes of action, while Johnson allowed the lone goal in the second frame.

The Yellowjackets were whistled for nine fouls, while Hannibal-LaGrange was called for eight. Graceland also received a yellow card in the 79th minute, issued to Grace Eltiste.

Lineup and Personnel Notes

Coach Porter used the match as an opportunity to evaluate depth ahead of the conference schedule. In total, 28 players saw minutes for Graceland, with contributions from a wide range of positions.

Freshman defender Nuria Garcia recorded her first assist of the season, while junior forward Wissal Rafik added her second. First-year forward Kylie Overkamp put a shot on target late in the match, and sophomore defender Ciara James forced a second-half save with a well-placed effort from distance.

Graceland's defensive unit — including Christine Burke, Mackenzie Melrose, Katelyn Scott, and Addison Fletcher — helped hold the Trojans without a first-half shot and conceded just one corner in the opening 45 minutes.

"We got meaningful minutes from players across the roster today," Porter added. "The match gave us a good look at our structure under pressure and allowed us to test some combinations ahead of Mount Mercy."

Season Outlook

With the win, Graceland closes non-conference play at 3-1-1 overall. The Yellowjackets remain 0-0 in HAAC competition, with their first conference fixture coming midweek.

Hannibal-LaGrange drops to 0-4 (0-0 HAAC) and continues its search for form after being outscored 14-2 through its first four matches.

Graceland enters conference play with momentum, having scored 12 goals over its last three matches and holding opponents to three or fewer shots on goal in back-to-back outings.
