Graceland Women’s Soccer Falls to Central Methodist 6-0

Fayette, Mo. – Graceland University's women's soccer team was unable to match Central Methodist University's relentless attack on Monday night, falling 6-0 at Davis Field. The Yellowjackets now stand at 3-5-2 overall and 0-3 in conference play, while Central Methodist improves to 7-1-1 overall and 2-1 in conference.

Central Methodist struck early with a goal in the 11th minute when Kirstine Lykke found the back of the net with an assist from Paula Castro, marking Lykke's 12th goal of the season. Graceland's defensive unit, led by goalkeeper Maggie Peterson, held firm for much of the first half, but the pressure continued to mount as Central Methodist fired off nine shots in the opening period. Peterson made four saves, but a second goal came just before halftime in the 38th minute when Abbie Crispell scored with an assist from Maja Henriksen, putting the Eagles up 2-0 at the break.

The second half saw Central Methodist continue to dominate possession, launching another eight shots and adding four more goals. Lykke scored her second and third goals in the 54th and 70th minutes, completing her hat trick. Additional goals from Lacey Ann Murray in the 74th minute and Luisa Schaupp in the 85th minute solidified the Eagles' victory.

Graceland's offensive opportunities were limited throughout the match. The Yellowjackets managed only two shots on goal, one each from Cassidy Andrews and Caitlin Lageman, but Central Methodist's defense, anchored by goalkeeper Madison Priebe, held firm. Priebe, who faced no shots on goal in the first half, maintained her clean sheet through the final whistle.

Graceland's head coach, Randall Porter, expressed his disappointment with the result but remained optimistic about the team's growth. "Tonight's performance wasn't what we've come to expect from ourselves. There's disappointment, of course, but we're staying committed to the process," said Porter. "We have a young team, and every match is a learning opportunity. We'll review the film and be ready to bounce back."

Defensively, Graceland battled valiantly, with Peterson making seven saves in her 75 minutes in goal. Ava Dondero came in as a substitute goalkeeper for the final 15 minutes and added two more saves to her tally.

The Yellowjackets were also held to just two corner kicks for the match, compared to Central Methodist's three, further highlighting the difficulty Graceland had in maintaining pressure on its opponent.

Graceland will look to regroup as they prepare for their next match on Saturday, September 28, when they travel to Parkville, Mo. to face Park University. Kickoff is set for noon at Julian Field, where the Yellowjackets will aim to turn things around and secure their first conference victory of the season.
