Yellowjackets Draw 1-1 Against Avila in Non-Conference Matchup
LAMONI, Iowa — Graceland University played to a 1-1 draw against Avila University on Wednesday in a tightly contested match at the John Rasmussen Soccer Complex. Both teams put forth strong defensive efforts, but despite several chances, the Yellowjackets were unable to find a late winner, leaving them with a hard-fought draw as they prepare for conference play.
Graceland got on the board early in the first half when forward Chloe Montera found the back of the net at the 10:22 mark. The goal, Montera's first of the season, was assisted by Emily Carmen, whose through-ball allowed Montera to slot the ball past Avila's goalkeeper, Maria Kristensen.
Despite the early momentum, Graceland was unable to capitalize further in the half. Avila responded with increased pressure in the second period, ultimately leveling the score in the 66th minute. Avila forward Cali Lasater scored an unassisted goal following a defensive miscommunication from the Yellowjackets, making it 1-1.
Graceland goalkeeper Alexia Johnson made several crucial saves throughout the match, recording four in the second half alone, to keep the score level. In total, Graceland managed seven shots on goal compared to Avila's eight. Carmen and Montera were active throughout the game, with Montera leading the Yellowjackets with three shots on goal.
Corner kicks were a challenge for Graceland, as Avila dominated the set pieces with nine corner opportunities compared to just two for the Yellowjackets. Graceland's defense stood firm, however, limiting Avila to one goal despite consistent pressure.
After the match, Graceland head coach Randall Porter expressed his thoughts on the team's performance. "Not our best tonight and credit to Avila for having a lot to do with that," Porter said. "We scored an early goal and then couldn't get anything going for the rest of the game. Our focus now turns to conference, which starts against a very tough opponent on the road Saturday."
With this result, Graceland moves to 3-2-3 on the season and looks ahead to their conference opener this weekend. The Yellowjackets will hit the road for a key matchup against the MidAmerica Nazarene Pioneers, this Saturday at 11am, in Olathe, KS.
