Yellowjackets Drop Conference Doubleheader to Benedictine

LAMONI, Iowa — The Graceland University softball team dropped a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader to Benedictine (Kan.) on Sunday, falling 18-9 in Game 1 and 14-2 in Game 2 at Lamoni. The Yellowjackets move to 6-24 overall and 1-6 in conference play, while Benedictine improves to 8-2 overall (5-1 HAAC) and 6-1 overall (6-1 HAAC) across the twinbill.

In the opener, Graceland recorded nine runs on nine hits, highlighted by a six-run fourth inning that featured situational hitting and RBI production through the lineup. Josie McCuddin delivered a two-RBI double, while Paige Pieper added a solo home run in the fifth inning. McKenna Kelley and Sydney Bears each reached base multiple times as the Yellowjackets generated traffic with five walks and consistent contact at the plate.

Benedictine utilized early offensive pressure, plating 10 runs across the first three innings and adding a seven-run fourth inning, including a grand slam to extend the margin. The Ravens totaled 20 hits, capitalizing on extra-base production and run-scoring opportunities with runners in scoring position.

In Game 2, Graceland was limited to two runs on two hits, with Hallie Chamberlin accounting for both RBIs on a two-run single in the second inning. The Yellowjackets drew four walks, but Benedictine's pitching staff recorded nine strikeouts, limiting offensive rhythm and extra-base opportunities.

Benedictine again applied early pressure, scoring five runs in the first inning and adding multi-run frames in the second and third. The Ravens finished with 16 hits, including multiple doubles and two home runs, while executing in situational at-bats with runners advancing on productive outs.

"We had stretches where our offense executed with quality at-bats and situational awareness, especially in Game 1," head coach Todd Verwers said. "Our focus moving forward is tightening defensive execution and improving pitch location to limit big innings."

Graceland returns to conference play on Sunday, March 29, traveling to face William Penn (Iowa) in a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. CDT at Penn Softball Field in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
