Graceland Wrestling Competes at Missouri Valley Open

MARSHALL, Mo. – The Graceland University men's wrestling team competed at the Missouri Valley Open on Saturday, facing off against top NAIA programs in a challenging bracket-style tournament. The Yellowjackets saw strong performances across multiple weight classes, gaining valuable experience as they push toward the final stretch of the season.

Graceland competed against a field of teams from the Heart of America Athletic Conference and other NAIA programs, with wrestlers advancing through various rounds in the highly competitive open.

125-Pound Bracket:

  • Davian Guanajuato advanced past the opening round with a fall in 4:13 before securing another victory via technical fall (20-3).
  • Ryker Smith picked up a quick 17-second fall in his opening bout before falling in a tight 8-5 decision in the next round.

133-Pound Bracket:

  • Riley Harger opened his tournament with a first-period fall in 1:52 before being eliminated in the later rounds.
  • Payton Harger battled through a tough bracket, advancing with an 8-5 sudden victory decision before falling to a 16-4 major decision in the quarterfinals.

141-Pound Bracket:

  • Julius Martin picked up a hard-fought 5-0 decision in the opening round before being eliminated in the second round.

149-Pound Bracket:

  • Hoakea Salter competed in a deep bracket but fell via fall in 3:36 in the opening round.

157-Pound Bracket:

  • Brayden Phillips picked up a 7-5 decision win before being eliminated in the following round.
  • Khalil Hampton fell via fall in 1:06 in his opening bout.

Graceland head coach Zack Mullins praised his team's performance and mentality throughout the tournament.

"I'm proud of the way our guys fought and competed today. They are a great group of guys committed to seeing how good they can be, which makes me excited for a strong finish down the home stretch of this season."

Graceland will return to action in a conference dual against Baker University on Thursday, February 6, at 7:00 p.m. in Lamoni, Iowa, at the Morden Center.
