Graceland Wrestling Shows Depth at Falcon Open

Park City, Kan. — The Graceland University men's wrestling team competed at the prestigious Falcon Open this past weekend, hosted by Friends University and held offsite at Hartman Arena in Park City, Kan. The large collegiate event brought together competitive talent from across the region, testing the Yellowjackets in multiple weight classes. Graceland's grapplers showcased their grit, with numerous athletes making significant progress and earning key victories throughout the tournament.

Highlighting Graceland's standout performances was Jett Nelson, who wrestled in the elite bracket at 174 lbs and finished with an impressive 4-2 record. Nelson's weekend featured two notable victories: a win over the #15 nationally ranked wrestler at 174 lbs and a victory against the #25 ranked opponent at 165 lbs. His tenacity set the tone for Graceland's competitive drive.

"We decided to attend this tournament to challenge our guys and maximize their growth," said Head Coach Zack Mullins. "The guys wrestled hard all weekend and represented Graceland well. Now we will take this experience back into practice and continue to get better."

In addition to Nelson, Graceland saw significant contributions from other wrestlers in the elite bracket. Ryan Anderson (149 lbs) and Joe Teguia (184 lbs) each secured 4-2 records, demonstrating consistency and resilience against a tough field. KJ Fry, competing at 184 lbs, delivered a 4-1 performance, and John Schuttler (197 lbs) concluded his weekend at 3-2, showcasing his determination in each match.

Graceland's depth was further highlighted by match wins from Riley Harger (133 lbs), TJ Smith (133 lbs), Nick Foster (133 lbs), Invi Bella (165 lbs), Stephen Dickerson (165 lbs), Jerry Nyberg (174 lbs), and heavyweight Kazz Hyson (285 lbs). These individual victories reinforced the team's strong showing across various weight categories.

Graceland also fielded competitors in the amateur bracket, where Braiden Beane (157 lbs) made an impact with a 4-2 record, demonstrating resilience and skill throughout his matches. Ty Solverson (149 lbs) posted a 3-2 finish, further contributing to Graceland's depth in talent.

Additional notable efforts included 2-2 finishes by Aiden Sanchez (184 lbs), Jayden Angle (197 lbs), and Carlos Ruiz (285 lbs), showcasing potential and competitive spirit.

The Falcon Open was a critical early-season test for the Yellowjackets, allowing the coaching staff to evaluate performance and identify areas for improvement. The experience gained at this high-level competition will be invaluable as the team continues to refine its strategies and techniques.

Graceland now turns its focus to its home opener in the Morden Center this Thursday, at 6pm when the Jackets will play host to University of Saint Mary (KS) in 6pm dual.
