Wrestling Shut Down the Statesmen

Lamoni, Iowa – The Graceland University Wrestling team dueled and defeated the William Penn University Statesmen, 30-10. The Yellowjackets are 3-1 on the season.

 

Starting the Yellowjackets off for the night, in the 125-lb weight class Denias Johnson took on the Statesmen Jeffery Myer. Myers would win by pin, putting the contest to 6-0 in favor of the Statesmen.

Next in the 133 lbs. weight class, Joe Lupton would take down William Penn's Sabri Sino by decision 11-3. The score now 4-6.

In the following weight class, 141 lbs. Ryan Anderson would take on the Statemen Noah Aken. The Yellowjackets would take the class by decision (13-3) and take the lead 7-6.

The Yellowjackets would get their first pin (second period 1:19) of the night from Jackson Wenberg against William Penn's Brise Bennett in the 149 lbs weight class. The score now 13-6.

The Statemen would follow with a victory in the 157 lbs weight class. Steven Skewes of William Penn won by decision (10-0) over Invi Bella of Graceland. Skewes brought the contest to 13-10

Following in the 165 lbs weight class, Graceland's Mark Leija would step to the mat to take on William Penn's Preston Wiest. Leija would win by decision (6-5), moving the contest to 16-10.

At the 174 lbs weight class, Jeraimiah Nyberg (GU) would take on Matheson Meade (WP). The Yellowjackets would take the victory by decision (7-5). The score now 19-10.

Cameron Cornman (GU) would follow next with his own victory over Mason Walters (WP) by decision (14-2) in the 184 lbs weight class and bring the contest to 23-10.

At the 197 lbs weight class, John Schuttler would take the win by decision (8-1) over William Penn's Branson Bottorff. The score now 26-10.

The final weight class of the night featured Graceland's David Toese and William Penn's Maxwell Diaz. Toese would win by decision and ended the score at 30-10.

The Yellowjackets will head back to the mat on Friday, January 13 when they the Grand View University Vikings. Match start is set for 7:00 pm.
