Wrestling Take Home Victory Over Warriors on Opening Night.

Lamoni, Iowa – The Graceland University Wrestling team dueled against the Waldorf University (Iowa) Warriors and took home the win on their Season and Home opener, 38-13. The Yellowjackets are 1-0 on the season.

 

Riece Graham started the Yellowjackets off for the night, taking the 125 lbs. weight class; Waldorf edged out Graham in a 4-15 decision to bring the contest

In the following weight class, 133 lbs., Joe Lupton stepped to the mat to take on Waldorf's Alfredo Moreno. Lupton would dominate with a tech fall (20-4) to help the Yellowjackets take the lead 5-4.

Ryan Anderson took on the 141 lbs. weight class, and gave the Yellowjackets their first pin of the night over Ian Sandoz (WU). The score is now 11-4.

The Warriors were able to find the board again in the 149 lbs. weight class; Tyler Okada of Waldorf won by decision (1-9) over Colby Wilken of Graceland. Okada brought the contest to 11-8.

The next weight class was 157 lbs. and Jerimiah Nyberg (GU) stepped to the mat to take Jalon Strong (WU). The Warriors would win the decision (19-24) and take the contest in their favor (11-13). 

Invi Bella would take the next match with his own victory at 165 lbs. with the decision of 5-1, to take the lead 14-13.

At the 174 lbs. weight class Mark Leija came out strong to push ahead early and would pin Waldorf's Roemelo Hudson in the third period. The Yellowjackets extend their lead 20-13. 

Trey Graves followed Leija by pinning his opponent at the 184 lbs. weight class. The score is now 26-13.

John Schuttler would take the 197 lbs. weight class by forfeited, to put the Yellowjackets at 32-13.

The final weight class of the night featured Graceland's David Toese and Waldorf's Jackson Rickter. Toese pinned his opponent with 24 seconds remaining in the first period to give the Yellowjackets the victory 38-13.

 

Up Next:

The Yellowjackets will head back to the mat on Saturday, November 5, when they travel to Indianola, Iowa to take part in the Simpson College Open. The tournament is set to begin at 9:00 am.
