Statesmen Claim Close Conference Dual Over Jackets

OSKALOOSA, Iowa - In their first conference dual of the season, Graceland University wrestling fell 22-21 on the road to William Penn University.

"It's always tough to lose a close one like tonight, especially when one point stands between a 4-1 overall record," said Zack Mullins, head wrestling coach. "The end result wasn't what we wanted, but I'm happy with our efford. Our guys wrestled hard seven minutes and put our team in a position to win. Coming off of a winter break we have some things to work on and improved upon, but can certainly build on what we saw tonight.

The night began with Kruz Adamson and John Altieri competing at 125 lbs. Following a close first dual, Altieri won by decision (12-9) to give the Statesmen the 3-0 lead.

WPU continued their momentum in the next match, as Darquell Pierre won by fall (4:09) over Dashiell Mann at 133 lbs.

Caleb Ashe then wrestled against Fabian Rodriguez at 141 lbs. He took the match by decision (10-4) to bring the score to 9-3 in favor of William Penn.

The next weight class, 149lbs, was taken by Bradley Watson of William Penn. Watson won by fall (5:21) over GU's Shea Swafford.

At the next two weight classes, 157lbs and 165lbs, the Jackets came out on top. Brandon Seward (157 lbs) won by decision over Kionte Croker and Coulter Allen (165 lbs) won in a close decision (15-13) over Logan Loftus. Following the first six matches, William Penn led 15-9.

The Statemen turned the tide, taking the 174lbs and 184lbs matches. Austin Goinn won by major decision (13-0) over Dakota Britt (174). Jeremy Walters followed with another close decision (14-12) win over Zach Kraus (184).

Ryan Paige then won by fall (1:28) at 197lbs over Dane Jones, before the night concluded with Will Samuel win by forfeit at 285lbs.

The wrestling team is now 3-2 overall and will return home on Friday, January 13 to host Grand View University.
