Yellowjackets Fall to Culver-Stockton in HAAC Matchup
CANTON, Mo. — The Graceland University men's volleyball team (2-21, 1-12) fell to Culver-Stockton (3-20, 1-13) in straight sets, 25-16, 25-21, 25-17, Tuesday evening at Charles Field House. Despite the result, the Yellowjackets continued to show progression in system execution and offensive efficiency.
Graceland posted a .217 team hitting percentage with 33 kills on 83 total attacks, while adding 33 assists and 12 total blocks. The Yellowjackets were most effective in the opening and closing frames, hitting .250 in set one and .292 in set three, but were unable to sustain runs against a Culver-Stockton squad that hit .412 as a team.
Kalanikapu Aona led the offensive effort with seven kills on eight swings for an .875 hitting percentage, while Elijah Kline added six kills on .333 hitting. Jerze Simonson contributed five kills on a .571 clip, and setter Nairod Fonseca distributed 16 assists to pace the offense.
Graceland generated early momentum in the opening set, capitalizing on blocking presence from Aona and Andrew Cziep to establish a 2-0 lead. However, Culver-Stockton responded with extended scoring runs fueled by high-percentage attacking, including 15 kills from Cooper Varner. The Yellowjackets battled in system during the second set, tying the frame late at 21-21 before conceding the final four points.
"We saw improved tempo in transition and better decision-making from our setters tonight," said head coach Eric Majors. "This group continues to compete, and as we build off our second win earlier this season, we're focused on sustaining efficiency point-to-point."
Defensively, Graceland recorded 20 digs and limited service errors to eight, but struggled to slow Culver-Stockton's balanced attack, which produced 46 kills across three sets.
Graceland will return to action on March 27 (Friday) at 7 p.m. CDT, traveling to Oskaloosa, Iowa, to face William Penn (IA) in conference play.
