Graceland Men’s Volleyball Falls to Grand View in Heart Conference Play

LAMONI, Iowa – The Graceland University Yellowjackets came up short against No. 7-ranked Grand View in Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) play on Saturday evening at Morden Center, dropping a straight-set match (14-25, 18-25, 19-25). With the loss, Graceland moves to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in conference play, while Grand View improves to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the Heart.

Match Recap

The Yellowjackets struggled to find their rhythm against a disciplined Viking squad that executed efficiently on both sides of the net. Graceland posted a .117 hitting percentage, compared to Grand View's .385, with the visitors controlling the tempo through aggressive serving and strong net presence.

The opening set saw Grand View establish an early lead, forcing Graceland into attack errors. The Vikings' Ryan Griffel led the charge with nine kills on a .538 hitting percentage, while setter Rafael Obrusnik dished out 22 assists to keep the offense in system. The Yellowjackets had flashes of solid play, with Elijah Kline recording three kills in the frame, but they were unable to overcome the Vikings' efficient attack, dropping the first set 14-25.

Graceland showed resilience in the second set, keeping the score close early behind key swings from Andrew Cziep and Christopher Sawyer, who each contributed kills to keep the deficit within reach. However, Grand View's serving pressure, led by Leonardo Annichini and Daniel Galili, helped the Vikings pull away late, securing the second set 25-18.

The third set was the most competitive of the night for the Yellowjackets, as Kline and Sawyer combined for key blocks at the net, while Malakai Moua added a service ace to keep the energy up. Graceland fought off multiple runs and cut the lead to 22-19, but Grand View closed out the match behind a kill from Malakai Christian to seal the set, 25-19.

Stat Leaders

Despite the loss, head coach Eric Majors emphasized the team's continued development against elite competition.

"We knew coming in that Grand View was a high-caliber opponent," Majors said. "Our guys competed, and we had stretches where we executed our game plan well. Now, it's about building on those moments and maintaining consistency throughout a match."
