Graceland Falls 1–0 to (RV) Baker in Home Conference Match
LAMONI, Iowa — A second-half strike proved the difference as the Graceland University men's soccer team dropped a 1–0 decision to Baker University, which is receiving votes in the latest NAIA Coaches' Poll, on Saturday evening in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
The Yellowjackets held Baker off the scoreboard for more than 50 minutes and produced a strong defensive showing throughout the match. However, an unassisted goal by Akira Itadani in the 51st minute stood as the match-winner, despite a late push from Graceland to equalize.
With the result, Graceland falls to 3-9-1 overall and 2-7 in the HAAC, while Baker improves to 8-4-2 overall and 5-3-1 in conference play.
"We played a much better competitive match for 90 minutes today," said head coach Bryan Courtney. "We shored up the defense and were a little unlucky with a bad bounce. Proud of the way we battled today."
Match Recap
The opening half featured a balanced exchange, with both sides recording limited opportunities on goal. Graceland's best early chance came in the 7th minute when Ryan Gourzong forced a save from Baker goalkeeper Maxot Arystanov. The Yellowjackets created two late set-piece chances before the break, earning corner kicks in the 44th and 45th minutes, but could not convert.
Baker broke through in the 51st minute. A miscleared ball fell to Itadani at the top of the area, and the midfielder's shot took a deflection before finding the lower corner for the game's only goal.
Graceland responded with urgency in the final third, increasing pressure and generating quality looks. Nesta Kofi, Mario Salinas, Adam Wiman, and Kaden Edwards each registered shots in the final 10 minutes, including three on target, but Arystanov turned away each attempt to secure the clean sheet.
The Yellowjackets' final opportunity came in the 90th minute when Edwards fired from close range, but Arystanov smothered the shot to seal the result.
Team Stats
Baker finished with a slight 9–8 advantage in total shots, though Graceland held the edge in shots on goal, 4–3. The Wildcats attempted three corner kicks, while the Yellowjackets earned two — both late in the first half.
Graceland goalkeeper Yuta Hirano made two saves in the loss, playing all 90 minutes. The defensive unit of Matthew Stine, Andrew Porter, Adam Wiman, and Guillermo Tejada limited Baker's opportunities in transition and controlled the box throughout the first half.
Graceland's offensive efforts were distributed across the lineup, with significant second-half contributions from Kofi, Salinas, Gourzong, Juan Gelves, Ashton Adrian, and Samuel Steiner. The Yellowjackets deployed 19 players in the match, using substitutions strategically to apply late pressure and create movement in the final third.
Looking Ahead
Graceland will look to bounce back in its next match as the Yellowjackets travel to Dubuque, Iowa, to face Clarke University on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 7:00 p.m. in another Heart of America Athletic Conference fixture. The contest will take place at Burrows Field, where Graceland aims to capitalize on recent improvements in defensive shape and maintain pressure in the final third. Clarke enters the matchup positioned in the middle of the conference table, making it a pivotal test for a Graceland side eager to turn competitive performances into results as the regular season winds down.
