GU Drops Heartbreaker to Park, Courtney Still Focuses On Positive Progress

LAMONI, Iowa — Graceland University men's soccer fell just short in a tightly contested Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday, suffering a 4–3 loss to visiting Park University at Rasmussen Sports Complex. Despite a dynamic offensive performance and a two-goal outing from junior forward Mario Salinas, the Yellowjackets were unable to fend off a second-half comeback from the Pirates.

With the defeat, Graceland drops to 3-7-1 overall and 1-2-1 in Heart play. Park improves to 4-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference.

Graceland opened the match on the front foot, dictating tempo and pressing high. Salinas opened the scoring in the 4th minute, finishing off a setup from Juan Gelves. In the 22nd minute, Salinas doubled his tally by converting a penalty kick, giving the Yellowjackets a 2–0 lead.

Park responded in the 31st minute through Marcos Fernandes, cutting the deficit to 2–1 at the half. Graceland controlled much of the first period, outshooting Park 11–3 and forcing goalkeeper Felipe Ramos into five first-half saves.

The Yellowjackets restored a two-goal lead early in the second half, as Kaden Edwards finished a feed from Salinas in the 48th minute to make it 3–1. However, Park's comeback began in the 66th minute with a goal from Luka Andonovski, followed by the equalizer from Grant Barry in the 74th and the game-winner by Jacksyn McIntyre in the 82nd.

Graceland pushed for a late equalizer, with Guillermo Tejada testing Ramos in the 85th minute, but the Pirates held firm.

The Yellowjackets finished with 17 total shots (10 on goal), while Park recorded 18 shots (10 on goal). Graceland also held a 6–4 edge in corner kicks, reflecting sustained attacking pressure.

Yuta Hirano tallied six saves in goal for Graceland, while Ramos finished with seven for Park. The match saw a physical edge, with Graceland whistled for 14 fouls and two yellow cards, compared to 11 fouls and one card for Park.

Salinas led the Yellowjackets with two goals and one assist, while Edwards added one goal. Gelves contributed an assist and three shots, with Wesner, Adrian, and Tejada adding to the offensive effort.

Despite the loss, head coach Bryan Courtney emphasized the team's development:

"We are really proud of the effort of our team tonight. It was a great effort by everyone all around against a great Park team. We are making progress and although the wins aren't coming, we are gaining valuable experience for the future," Courtney said.

It marked the third time this season that Graceland has led by multiple goals before an opponent's comeback. Still, the offensive creativity and chemistry continue to show growth as the Yellowjackets head deeper into conference play.

UP NEXT: Graceland returns to Heart action on Saturday, Oct. 11, when it hosts Central Methodist University. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CDT at Rasmussen Sports Complex in Lamoni.
