Graceland Men’s Soccer Drops 4-1 Decision to Missouri Valley in Heart Play

LAMONI, Iowa — The Graceland University men's soccer team fell 4-1 to Missouri Valley College on Saturday night at the Rasmussen Sports Complex in Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) action. With the result, Graceland moved to 3-5-1 overall and 2-3-0 in conference play, while Missouri Valley improved to 6-2-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the Heart.

The contest featured stretches of balanced possession and multiple chances on goal for both sides, but Missouri Valley's finishing proved decisive in the second half.

First Half: Even Exchanges

The opening 45 minutes showcased strong organization from Graceland, who absorbed early pressure and generated quality looks on the counterattack. The Yellowjackets recorded five shots in the first half, including attempts from Mario Salinas, Samuel Steiner, and Kaden Edwards, while goalkeeper Yuta Hirano collected two saves to deny Missouri Valley.

Defensively, Graceland's back line of David Hopfer, Adam Wiman, and Guillermo Tejada stayed compact, limiting the Vikings to just three total shots before halftime. The teams entered the break scoreless, setting up a second half where chances would prove costly.

Missouri Valley Converts After the Break

Missouri Valley broke through in the 51st minute, when Taiga Matsumoto found space at the top of the penalty area and finished unassisted to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Vikings doubled their advantage in the 64th minute, with Matsumoto again on the scoresheet, this time finishing a pass from Felipe Hernandez Carrasco to make it 2-0.

Graceland responded with increased attacking pressure. Salinas forced multiple saves, while Hopfer's header in the 66th minute was turned aside by goalkeeper C. Vicente Benitez Delgado, who made seven total saves on the night.

Edwards Provides Graceland Response

In the 84th minute, Graceland pulled one back. Freshman forward Kaden Edwards capitalized on a loose ball in the box and scored unassisted to cut the deficit to 2-1. The goal was Edwards' second of the season and provided a spark for the Yellowjackets and home supporters.

The momentum shift was short-lived. Just 43 seconds later, Missouri Valley regained a two-goal advantage when Bartomeu Trias finished from close range off an assist by Shiko Kiyomiya.

The Vikings added their fourth and final goal in the 86th minute, with Davor Marinkovic scoring from inside the area, again set up by Kiyomiya.

Final Statistics

The box score reflected the tight nature of the match. Graceland held a narrow 15-14 advantage in total shots, including eight on frame. Missouri Valley recorded 12 shots on goal from their 14 attempts, forcing Hirano into eight saves across 90 minutes.

Graceland earned four corner kicks, all in the second half, compared to Missouri Valley's six. Fouls were nearly even, with the Vikings whistled eight times and the Yellowjackets seven. Three yellow cards were issued, including cautions to Mario Salinas and Juan Gelves for Graceland, and one to Missouri Valley's Yannick Muller.

Individually, Salinas led Graceland with five shots and two on goal, while Steiner and Edwards each added multiple attempts.

Coach's Perspective

Head coach Bryan Courtney reflected on the performance and the lessons gained from facing a talented Missouri Valley side.

"We played a great first half against a talented Missouri Valley team tonight," Courtney said. "Our failure to capitalize on our half chances really came back to bite us. Missouri Valley were clinical with their opportunities, and that was the difference. We continue to improve each week, and I am proud of the effort from our group."

Conference Implications

The result placed Graceland at 2-3-0 in the Heart standings as the midway point of the conference slate approaches. The match also reinforced the competitiveness of the Heart, where several nationally ranked programs compete week to week.

Missouri Valley's win moved them to 4-1-0 in conference play, keeping pace near the top of the league table. The Vikings' attacking trio of Matsumoto, Trias, and Marinkovic combined for all four goals, highlighting their depth in the final third.

For Graceland, the contest continued a stretch of matches against high-level opponents, offering valuable experience for a squad blending veteran leadership with underclassmen gaining increased minutes.

Looking Ahead: Homecoming on the Hill

Next weekend marks a special occasion for the Yellowjackets as Graceland celebrates its 100th Homecoming on the Hill. The milestone event highlights a century of tradition in Lamoni, bringing alumni, students, and the community together. Soccer has become a central part of the weekend's celebrations, with alumni regularly gathering at Rasmussen Sports Complex to support the current generation of players.
