Hopfer Goal Not Enough as Graceland Falls to #8 William Penn

OSKALOOSA, Iowa — The Graceland University Yellowjackets gave No. 8 William Penn University a spirited challenge Wednesday night at Drost Field, but the Statesmen's attacking depth and second-half surge secured a 3-1 win in Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) action.

With the loss, Graceland falls to 3-4-1 overall and 2-2-0 in Heart play, while the nationally ranked Statesmen improve to 5-1-3 (3-0-2 Heart).

William Penn outshot Graceland 12-7 overall and capitalized on their chances, scoring once in the first half and twice more after the break. Graceland kept pace in key stretches but struggled to contain the rotating offensive pressure of the Statesmen, who used more than a dozen substitutions to wear down the Yellowjackets.

The hosts struck first in the 21st minute when Albert Feixas netted a close-range goal off a setup from Javier Perez, giving William Penn a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Graceland's best early opportunity came from Ashton Adrian, who forced a save from keeper Ryan Walsh-Rowe in the 22nd minute. Freshman Kaden Edwards added a second shot on goal in the 76th minute, but both attempts were denied.

William Penn extended its lead in the 62nd minute, as Hector Bastos finished a low ball from Angel Valdez to make it 2-0.

The Yellowjackets responded almost immediately. In the 66th minute, junior defender David Hopfer—a steady presence in the back line all evening—made a well-timed run and buried a feed from freshman forward Ryan Gourzong, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

But the comeback was short-lived. Just four minutes later, Mathis Thyli added the dagger, slotting home a third goal for William Penn off a quick exchange with John-Joe Mullane.

Graceland goalkeeper Yuta Hirano faced four shots on goal, making one save—including a penalty kick stop in the 87th minute against Raimu Shingo to deny a late insurance goal. The freshman keeper displayed poise despite constant pressure and earned praise for his late-game composure.

Sophomore Ashton Adrian was again active in the final third, logging two of Graceland's four shots on target, including a dangerous strike in the 87th. Midfield contributors Samuel Steiner and Andrew Porter helped anchor transitions, while the defensive trio of Adam Wiman, Jack Van Den Oetelaar, and Hopfer saw major minutes.

Freshmen Joaquin Wesner, Matteo Iossa, Kaden Edwards, Cale Williams, and Juan Gelves also contributed heavily, with Iossa registering a late shot attempt and Wesner notching two shots in the first half.

In total, seven different Yellowjackets registered shots. The team finished with four shots on goal and one corner kick. Graceland was issued two yellow cards—one to Steiner (81') and one to Hopfer (86')—as the physical tone of the match escalated late. William Penn was whistled for 10 fouls and received six bookings of their own.

After the game, head coach Bryan Courtney emphasized the learning experience for his developing squad.

"There is a reason William Penn is a top-10 team nationally," Courtney said. "Their experience, depth and tempo challenged us. But our guys showed resilience, especially bouncing back after their second goal. We'll take this game, learn from it, and refocus for Saturday."

Up next: Graceland returns home to the Rasmussen Sports Complex in Lamoni, Iowa, to host Missouri Valley College on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. CDT in another crucial Heart conference matchup.
