Graceland Men’s Soccer Falls to Mount Mercy in Road Conference Match
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Graceland University men's soccer team fell in a 2-1 decision against Mount Mercy University on Wednesday evening at Hadzic Field. The Yellowjackets move to 1-3-1 overall, 0-1-0 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart), while Mount Mercy improved to 4-2-1 overall, 1-1-0 in conference play.
The Yellowjackets struck first in the 10th minute when forward Kaden Edwards capitalized on a loose ball and scored unassisted, giving Graceland an early advantage. The strike was Edwards' first of the season and provided Graceland momentum in the opening half.
Following the goal, Graceland sustained pressure with a series of attacks. Forward Ashton Adrian recorded three shots on target, forcing Mount Mercy goalkeeper Zach Biggs into action. Midfielder Andrew Porter and forward Samuel Steiner also tested the defense with attempts from the midfield, but Graceland could not add to its tally before halftime.
Mount Mercy responded in the second half, earning a penalty opportunity in the 59th minute. Forward Chris Difficile converted the penalty kick to equalize the match at 1-1. The Yellowjackets continued to push forward, generating five shots and three corner kicks in the second frame.
Despite the effort, the Mustangs secured the match-winner in the 89th minute. Forward Pablo Ortega Herreros finished a cross from Cyprien Rocard, sealing the 2-1 result for Mount Mercy.
On the night, Graceland outshot Mount Mercy 10-5, including a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. The Yellowjackets also led in corner kicks, earning five to the Mustangs' four.
Goalkeeper Dither Beltran played the full 90 minutes, recording three saves. His efforts included key stops in the 77th and 85th minutes, but the late Mustang goal broke the deadlock. Beltran fell to 1-3-1 on the season with the result.
Discipline was a factor in the match, as both sides were issued multiple cautions. Graceland received four yellow cards, assessed to Mario Salinas (35th), Andrew Porter (48th), Nesta Kofi (57th), and Adam Wiman (87th). Mount Mercy was cautioned three times, with yellow cards to Ortega Herreros, Patrick Burke, and Difficile.
Adrian led the Yellowjackets with three shots on frame, while Edwards, Joaquin Wesner, and Juan Gelves each added shots on target. Steiner recorded two attempts from midfield, while Porter and Gelves added attacking presence throughout both halves.
The match was tightly contested statistically. Graceland committed 15 fouls compared to Mount Mercy's 16. The Yellowjackets were also flagged for offsides three times, limiting attacking sequences in the final third.
Mount Mercy utilized two goalkeepers during the match. Alejandro Cuende started but was substituted following Edwards' goal in the 10th minute. Biggs entered and played the final 80 minutes, finishing with five saves and earning the win.
Despite the setback, Graceland showcased a strong first-half performance, highlighted by possession control and organized defensive structure. The Yellowjackets' back line, anchored by defenders Jack Van Den Oetelaar, Adam Wiman, and David Hopfer, limited Mount Mercy to one shot in the opening 45 minutes.
The second half saw an increase in attacking exchanges. Graceland's best opportunities came late, including attempts in the 85th minute when Adrian and Gelves each forced saves from Biggs. A final corner in the 86th minute provided another chance, but the Mustangs cleared the delivery before countering for the decisive goal.
Head coach Bryan Courtney reflected on the performance and emphasized the growth of his young roster. "While we are extremely disappointed with the result, our young team made progress in the right direction," said Courtney.
"Our tempo and rhythm keeping were much better – 50 percent of our starting lineup were freshmen – the future continues to be bright. It's now time to move past this game and get ready for nationally ranked Benedictine in less than 72 hours."
The Yellowjackets' next match is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, against Benedictine College. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CDT at Legacy Field in Atchison, Kansas.
