Filip Prostran: A Life Shaped by Soccer, Service, and Serendipity
Where Are They Now – Legends of the Fall:
Toronto, Ontario- From a humble childhood in Oakville, Ontario, to a transformative tenure at Graceland University and a distinguished coaching career in Canadian collegiate soccer, Filip (Fil) Prostran's journey is one of resilience, heart, and unwavering dedication to the beautiful game.
From Adversity to Ambition
Born into a Serbian family that emigrated from Croatia, Prostran's early life was marked by loss—his father passed away when Fil was just three months old. Raised by a strong, persevering mother, he credits her with instilling the perspective and determination that still guide him today.
Encouraged by his older brother, Prostran joined a local house league, igniting a lifelong love for soccer. A twist of fate—his family name and a referee's recommendation—helped him land with the competitive Woodbridge Soccer Club, setting him on a trajectory toward elite competition.
Yellowjacket Roots
After a year of academic and athletic development, Prostran was recruited to Graceland University by Dr. Ivan Joseph, then the head coach of the Yellowjackets. The decision proved pivotal.
"At Graceland, I found more than just a team—I found lifelong friendships, purpose, and a second home," Prostran recalls.
His standout collegiate career peaked with a berth in the 2006 NAIA National Tournament, forever etching his name in Yellowjacket lore.
Going Global
Post-Graceland, Prostran pursued professional opportunities across Serbia, Malaysia, and Ireland—experiences that broadened his cultural perspective and sharpened his soccer IQ. But the most meaningful chapter came during his time in Serbia, where he lived with his grandfather. "Out of everything soccer gave me, I'm most grateful for that year with him," he says.
Building a Contender at TMU
Back in Canada, Prostran reunited with Dr. Joseph—now Director of Athletics at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU)—and soon took the helm of the men's soccer program. Since becoming head coach in 2015, Prostran has guided TMU to historic heights:
-
Playoff berths every season since 2015
-
OUA silver (2017) and bronze (2021) finishes
-
TMU's first-ever U SPORTS National Championship appearance (2017)
-
No. 1 national ranking during the 2022 campaign
-
OUA East Coach of the Year honors (2017, 2021)
-
U SPORTS Coach of the Year finalist
"My philosophy is simple," he explains. "Training should be the best two hours of your day. If it's not, something needs to change."
A Family Man and Lifelong Learner
An ACL injury during a co-ed staff soccer match at TMU introduced him to his future wife, Hilda—a Seneca College Hall of Famer. Today, they're raising two sons, Milan and Matteo, with a third child on the way.
"Parenting is the hardest and most beautiful thing I've ever done," Prostran says. "It's taught me patience, perspective, and even more gratitude."
He continues to study the game, including visits to Colombian clubs and even trying his first cup of coffee at age 32 in Medellín. Whether mentoring his TMU squad or coaching multiple teams in the offseason, Prostran remains all in.
"I get to recruit, train, lead—it's hands-on, personal, and deeply rewarding. I'm right where I need to be."
