Yellowjackets Suffer Loss to Ashford 3-0

Clinton, IA - The Graceland men's soccer team squared off today with Ashford University in a battle to keep its winning streak alive. The Yellowjackets would fight a tough game but would fall 3-0.

Ashford entered the game looking to keep the wins coming with a win over Culver-Stockton College just two days prior.

The first half started slowly as a majority of the game was played in the middle third of the field.

The Saints had the first real scoring opportunity in the 17th minute when Adam Wood would take a shot directly to the net. His shot was deflected by goalkeeper Mitchell Hart, which led to a rebound shot by Wood that would hit the post.

Graceland had its first opportunity to score in the 42nd minute when Sebastian Pineda Gordillo ripped off a shot. Pineda Gordillo's shot went wide and both teams would remain scoreless going into the half.

Ashford out shot Graceland 3-1 in the first half.

AU found the back of the net putting them on the board at the 52 minute mark once again with a shot from Wood making the score 1-0.

Ashford would score again before Graceland would have an opportunity to try and score themselves. Anthony Hedges would take a shot in the 70th minute but it would be saved by goalkeeper Joel Harrysson.

A Graceland lapse in defense would allow another goal from Daniel Collins making the score 3-0.

GU wasn't able to overcome the deficit, as their offense struggled to get much of anything going the entire day.

"We had a rough day today," said Head Coach Bryan Courtney. "We struggled just to complete passes, which led to turnover in dangerous positions. Then we had to spend so much energy recovering into position that we were too tired to form an effective attack. We will put this one behind us and move forward."

With the win Ashford improves to 5-3.

The loss drops the Yellowjackets to 5-2.

Graceland will return to action Sunday, September 20th, when they continue to travel to Culver-Stockton College to start conference play. Kick off is scheduled for 3:30pm.
