Yellowjackets Soar Past Missouri Baptist in Lightning-Shortened Road Victory
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Graceland football team delivered a complete team performance Saturday, defeating Missouri Baptist 41-14 in a non-conference contest that was officially called early in the fourth quarter after multiple lightning delays at Spartan Field.
With the result, Graceland improved to 2-1 overall (0-0 Heart of America Athletic Conference), while Missouri Baptist dropped to 1-2 overall (0-0 Heart). The win showcased explosive offense, a resilient defense, and depth across the roster — all of which will be vital as the Yellowjackets approach the grind of Heart play.
Monroe Sets the Tone
Graceland wasted no time striking through the air. Midway through the first quarter, quarterback CJ Brooks connected with All-American senior receiver Gerald Monroe for a 31-yard touchdown, capping a quick three-play, 56-yard drive. Monroe's diving grab electrified the Yellowjackets' sideline and gave the visitors a 7-0 lead.
Monroe, who has built a reputation for highlight-reel plays, reflected afterward on what the moment meant. "Sometimes, the greatest victories come from the ashes of our deepest defeats," he said, underscoring both the resilience of the team and the momentum generated from an early spark.
Graceland doubled its lead later in the quarter when Brooks engineered a six-play, 77-yard drive, finishing with an 8-yard touchdown strike to Aaron Bullock II. That made it 14-0 at the end of the first quarter and highlighted the versatility of an offense that can stretch the field or finish in the red zone.
Bullock Embraces His Role
Bullock, who finished with six catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns, emphasized the confidence this system instills in its receivers. "In this offense, you have to stay ready so you never have to get ready," Bullock explained. "Coach Staback trusts his guys, and as a receiver, that's all you can ask for — when your number gets called, you go make a play."
He did exactly that. Early in the second quarter, Brooks went back to Bullock for a 33-yard reception that set up another score.
Second-Quarter Surge
The Yellowjackets put the game firmly in their control in the second frame. At the 10:38 mark, Brooks hit PJ Caldwell for a 15-yard touchdown, then added a 36-yard scoring strike to Javon Minor less than three minutes later. By the midpoint of the second quarter, Graceland led 28-0 and had piled up over 250 yards of offense.
Missouri Baptist finally broke through with a 40-yard touchdown from Jacob Jones to Calvin Griffin, trimming the margin to 28-7. But the Owls' brief momentum did little to slow Graceland's rhythm.
Staback Focused on the Details
Head coach Phil Staback praised his team's energy but stressed the importance of discipline moving forward. "We've been emphasizing penalties because those little things matter in close games," Staback said. "We're getting better, especially with the crazy week we had, and our guys are playing hard. But we have to keep cleaning things up as the schedule gets tougher."
Balanced Attack After the Delay
Following a lengthy halftime lightning delay, the Yellowjackets leaned more on the ground game. Minor broke free for several chunk runs, and Brooks added a 14-yard rushing touchdown to make it 35-7 late in the third quarter.
Missouri Baptist cut into the deficit with a touchdown early in the fourth, but Graceland answered immediately. Brooks found Bullock for his second touchdown of the game, a 33-yard strike that pushed the lead to 41-14. Minutes later, officials cleared the field again due to lightning, and after consultation, declared the game final with 12:54 remaining.
Ornelas Highlights Defensive Intensity
While the offense piled up points, the defense did its part by limiting Missouri Baptist to just 111 rushing yards and forcing the Spartans into long down-and-distance situations. Graceland's front seven held the hosts to 4-for-15 on third downs.
Defensive coordinator Jesse Ornelas noted the effort was a product of buy-in across the roster. "We had a strong belief this week on playing hard for each other," Ornelas said. "We wanted to play more guys and keep our guys playing with higher intensity. New week, new goals."
Defensive leaders included Isaac Williams, Andrew Stephens, and Jacob Morales, who combined for multiple tackles for loss. The secondary, anchored by Marcus Green, limited Jones to 183 yards passing on 30 attempts.
Brooks Leads with Efficiency
At quarterback, Brooks put together one of the most efficient games of his career. He completed 18-of-28 passes for 318 yards and five touchdowns, while also adding a rushing score. His ability to spread the ball to multiple targets forced Missouri Baptist to defend the entire field.
Minor added 113 rushing yards on 14 carries, averaging more than eight yards per attempt. In total, Graceland rolled up 454 yards of offense at 8.6 yards per play.
