Graceland Dance Team Claims Runner-Up Finish at ISDTA State Championships

LAMONI, IA — The Graceland University Yellowjackets dance team delivered an impressive performance at the Iowa State Dance Team Association (ISDTA) Championships, earning a runner-up finish in the NAIA Hip Hop category. The competition, held at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, is recognized as the largest state dance competition in the nation, showcasing elite talent across various collegiate divisions.

Competing against strong NAIA programs, Graceland achieved a final score of 350.5 in the Hip Hop division, narrowly trailing St. Ambrose University, who took first place with a score of 362.5. The Yellowjackets also competed in the NAIA Jazz division, finishing in sixth place with a score of 337.5. Both routines displayed the team's precision, creativity, and dedication to their craft.

Competitive Excellence

The team's Hip Hop routine stood out for its high-energy choreography and clean execution. Judges praised the Yellowjackets' synchronization and use of technical elements, which helped them secure one of the top spots in a highly competitive field. However, a five-point penalty affected their final score, underscoring the high standards and rigor of the competition.

In the Jazz division, Graceland showcased elegance and athleticism, earning solid marks for artistry and musicality. Although finishing sixth, the team's performance demonstrated their versatility and growth as a program.

Reflecting on the Experience

Head Coach Kat Albertson expressed pride in her team's accomplishments. "The team had a great day competing at the ISDTA competition yesterday. It's the largest state dance competition in the country, and we were so proud to put our hard work on the floor," Albertson said. "Being runner-ups for NAIA Hip Hop is a huge accomplishment that we are very proud of! We look forward to using this as momentum as we turn the page to our NAIA season after the break."

The Yellowjackets continue to build their reputation as a strong competitor in collegiate dance, capitalizing on their commitment to excellence and teamwork.

Looking Ahead

The Yellowjackets dance program will take a short break for the holidays before returning to training for their winter competition schedule. Their next appearance will be on January 26, 2025, at the Viking Challenge in Des Moines, Iowa. The team aims to build on their success at the ISDTA Championships as they prepare for their NAIA competition season.
