Calcano’s Historic Two Grand Slams Power Graceland Split at MidAmerica Nazarene
OLATHE, Kan. — Rafael Calcano delivered a historic Game 1 performance with two grand slams and eight RBIs, leading Graceland University to an 18-8 victory over MidAmerica Nazarene in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Dixon Stadium. Despite MidAmerica Nazarene's conference affiliation, the games did not count toward conference standings.
Calcano, starting at shortstop, became the first player in program history to hit two grand slams in a single game, finishing 3-for-5 while anchoring a high-efficiency offensive output. Graceland (7-22) capitalized early, scoring nine runs in the opening inning through disciplined plate appearances, free passes, and situational execution.
The Yellowjackets produced 18 runs on eight hits and eight walks, maximizing scoring opportunities with timely hitting. Calcano's first grand slam came on a full-count pitch, driving the ball to left field to initiate the scoring surge. Carson Chiprez added two hits and two RBIs, while Gabriel Perez contributed a home run and two RBIs. Leadoff hitter Kellen Scruggs scored four runs and drove in two, setting the tone for offensive pressure throughout the lineup.
On the mound, Brian Knutsen (1-1) earned the win, working five innings with three strikeouts while allowing four earned runs. Graceland's pitching staff limited sustained rallies, despite MidAmerica Nazarene recording four home runs in the opener.
In Game 2, Graceland fell 7-3 as MidAmerica Nazarene secured the split with a decisive four-run third inning. The Yellowjackets recorded seven hits but were unable to convert in key scoring situations.
Perez, Juan Guzman, and Chiprez each recorded RBIs, while Josh Tomas went 2-for-3 at the plate. Guzman (1-1) took the loss after allowing five earned runs across 2.2 innings.
"Rafael's performance was historic and set the tone offensively," said head coach Brad Payne. "We executed situational at-bats, drew walks, and applied pressure early. While these games don't impact conference standings, they provided valuable reps as we prepare for league play."
