Baseball Sweeps Hannibal-LaGrange in Home Doubleheader

LAMONI - The Graceland University Baseball team hosted a non-conference doubleheader earlier today at Chase Stadium. They swept the visiting Hannibal-LaGrange University Trojans to improve to 10-22 on the season.

GAME 1 (W 7-3)

Through a fairly low-scoring contest, Graceland entered the bottom of the sixth inning down 3-1. In that inning, Graceland scored on a sacrifice fly to come within a run.

After holding the Trojans scoreless in the top of the seventh, Graceland was still down just one going into their final at bats. The Yellowjackets would get a lead-off double to come around and score to tie the game at 3-3. With two outs and the game tied, Matt Reyes hit a walk-off grand slam to end the game and give Graceland the 7-3 win in the opener.

Reyes led the Yellowjackets in hits going 2-2 in the game. As a team, Graceland had six hits overall. Payne Pfeiffer started the game on the mound and went the first five innings. Felix Lopez came in to relieve Pfeiffer pitching the final two innings and earning the win.

GAME 2 (W 10-3)

Graceland's offense got going much quicker in the nightcap. They scored two in the first inning and then put up a five-spot in the third to take a 7-0 lead.

Through five complete innings, Graceland had extended their lead to 10-1 over the Trojans after a five-hit inning in the bottom of the fifth. They held on in the end for the seven-run victory to complete the sweep.

Statistically, Zak Schueller and Tanner Maskey had three hits each in the second game. As a team, Graceland had 12 hits and drew seven walks offensively. Jorge Diaz threw six innings in the start and got the win while allowing just one earned run. Daniel Heffington pitched the final inning and struck out one.

The Yellowjackets will return to conference action this weekend as they will host Culver-Stockton College. First pitch will be at 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
