Baseball Hosts Midland in Non-Conference Doubleheader
LAMONI - Earlier today, the Graceland University Baseball team played a non-conference doubleheader versus the Midland University Warriors. The Yellowjackets split with the visiting Warriors to move to 7-19 overall.
GAME 1 (W 11-5)
Graceland scored in the bottom of the first to start off the game up 1-0. Midland answered with their first run of the contest then in the top of the second inning. The Yellowjackets took the lead back in the bottom of the third by scoring one run, but left the bases loaded to end the inning.
After scoring four in the fourth inning, Graceland added on five more runs in the bottom of the fifth on five hits. The Yellowjackets would hold an 11-4 lead heading into the sixth. Midland was able add a late run, but unable to make the comeback.
As a team, Graceland had 13 hits in game one to help them to 11 runs. Jorge Diaz got the win after going six-plus innings and gave up just four earned runs while striking out three. Roger Camacho came in to close the game in a non-save situation getting the final three outs. Offensively, the Yellowjackets were led by Zak Schueller who went 3-3 including a home run and a double while driving in four runs.
GAME 2 (L 7-4)
Midland put up four runs in the top of the second to take the first lead of the nightcap. Later in the bottom of the fourth, Graceland came back to tie the game at 4-4.
The Warriors took the lead back in the top of the sixth as they went up 6-4. They added one more run in the following inning and held on for the three-run win.
Graceland's Chris Krystofiak started the game on the mound going 4.2 innings and came away with a no-decision. The Yellowjackets had eight hits in game two, two of those from Tanner Maskey including a double in the third inning.
The baseball team will be back in conference action later this weekend as they will travel to Des Moines, Iowa for a four-game series with Grand View University. The series begins Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against the Vikings.
