Baseball Goes 1-2 Versus Peru State
LAMONI - The Graceland University baseball team won one of three games this weekend against the Peru State College Bobcats in their first home series of the season. They Yellowjackets won game one, 7-3 but fell in the final two games 7-3 and 14-5.
GAME 1
Graceland got a great outing from starting pitcher, Chris Morris who went 5.2 innings while giving up just three hits. Peru State took an early 1-0 lead through two innings of play. The Yellowjacket bats were quiet the first time through the order but would put a three-spot on the scoreboard in the 4th inning to take a 3-1 lead. They built on that the following inning adding on two more in the 5th inning. Peru State would close the gap with a run in the top of the sixth, but Graceland countered with another pair of runs in the bottom half.
Offensively, Graceland would total up nine hits in the 7-3 victory. They were led by the top two batters in the lineup, Andres Lopez and Tanner Maskey, who had two hits apiece.
GAME 2
The second game of the series was started on Saturday, but not completed until Sunday due to darkness late in the game. Peru State got out to a 6-0 lead through the first three innings of play. After a scoreless 4th inning for both offenses, Graceland got on the board in the bottom of the 5th to close the gap. They cut their deficit in half to trail 6-3 through five innings. The Bobcats would add a late insurance run to take game two, 7-3.
Aaron Hassell started the game on the mound and went six innings. Daniel Heffington and Trevor Brace were in relief for the final three innings and gave up just one hit combined.
GAME 3
Peru State put five runs on the board in the top of the first to take a commanding lead. Graceland scored one in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit down to four. The Bobcats built on their lead throughout the middle innings and led 10-2. The Yellowjackets would score three runs in the final two innings, but could not come any closer. Peru State took the series finale, 14-5.
Statistically, Matt Reyes led the team with three hits driving in two runs. Lopez added two hits and scored two runs.
The Yellowjackets will be at home again on Tuesday and Wednesday for a non-conference series with Presentation College.
