Coach Brunner started coaching the men’s and women’s Yellowjacket golf teams in the fall of 2001.
Over his years of coaching the team has shown steady improvement. The men’s team shot 306 in the fall of 2011 for the last men’s win, on the Bos Landen golf course in Pella, Iowa.
Prior year wins included a victory at the William Penn Invitational when the men’s team shot a +1, 289, at The Preserve golf course in Moravia, Iowa. Another victory for the men came in the fall of 2005 at the William Jewell Invitational.
The best conference finish was in 2006 when the team finished in 2nd place led by Senior Mark Bradish who was medalist for the tournament.
Over the years his teams have consistently finished in the top half of the conference tournaments.
The women’s program is now poised to make great strides with a full slate of quality players on the team. Experience will be a key to them being successful.
Over the years, individual women have won and placed high at many tournaments; however, there is a sense that this team will be the first to compete for a possible title either this year or next. The best finish at the conference tournament was 4th place in 2008 and the best team score was 367.
Coach Brunner is native to Colorado where he won a state tournament the summer after his senior year in High School.
He won many junior events while growing up on the eastern plains. He graduated from Graceland in 1986. While attending Graceland he played on the Yellowjacket golf team and finished in 5th place in the regional tournament in 1984 by winning a sudden death playoff and made the al- conference team in 1986, after recovering from a lower back injury sustained earlier that spring in a car accident.
After graduation, he worked at Cerner Corporation until 1998 when he made the switch from software development to teaching.
In 2001, he added coaching the golf teams to his resume. He has conducted a summer golf camp in late June for area children since 2003 where attendance has ranged as high as 72 campers.
He has created a very impressive practice facility over his tenure as head coach that includes a driving range with a heated indoor practice facility. The coach is still an avid golfer and is excited about the future of golf at Graceland.
Coach Brunner is married to Heather Brunner (Badder) and has three children Keeley, Timothy and Tiffany.
