- The Graceland baseball team traveled back to Fayette, Missouri today to make up the final two games of its scheduled weekend four-game series with Central Methodist University.
Graceland dropped game one to CMU, 6-3 and won game two, 8-0. The game two win avoided what would have been a four-game sweep by the Eagles. Bryan Couch
took the mound for Graceland in game one and gave the Jackets five solid innings. The bats couldn't provide enough run support however to top the six runs scored by CMU. Graceland had only five singles in game one and were limited to just two RBI's by Francis Rodriguez
and Alex Pena
Game two was a different story for the Jackets. GU combined power, good base running, great pitching and solid defense in the win.
Reigning conference pitcher of the week Martin Martinez
picked up right where he left off last week for the Jackets. Martinez
threw seven shutout innings of baseball grabbing the complete game win while striking out five, walking none and allowing only seven hits.
Offensively, Francis Rodriguez
had a monster game. Rodriguez went 2-4 with a solo bomb and a three-run double, driving in four total runs. Alex Pena
had two hits and Matt Kobeski
, Meredith Meador
and Brian Lira
all drove in runs in the shutout victory.
The Jackets are now 18-19 overall and 9-7 in HAAC play and currently sit fifth in the overall conference standings. GU will travel to Canton, Missouri on Saturday to face the Culver-Stockton College Wildcats twice Saturday and twice Sunday with both days slated for a 1pm first pitch.
