- The Graceland men's and women's track teams both took partial-squads to the 2012 Dutch Athletic Classic on the campus of Central College Friday night.
The men finished 4th at the meet and the women finished 5th. Both teams competed against several other midwest small schools.
"We were very pleased with the way the athletes performed tonight," said Head Coach Daniel Alvarado
. "We've got several athletes competing for a shot at nationals," he added.
On the women's side, three ladies stood out Friday for the Jackets. Marriah Willis
, Jami Ruckman
and Alice Ross
all had strong meets. Willis finished fourth in the 300 meter dash with a time of 46.77 and third in the 600 meter at 1:43.68. Long distance runners Ruckman and Ross each competed in the one mile finishing in second and third respectively. Ruckman ran a 5:31.09 with Ross right behind at 5:33.46.
For the men, several Jackets competed strong, paced by transfer Nicholas Gaitan
. Gaitan ran a fast 200 finishing in 14th place. His best event however was the 55 meter hurdles where he finished in 2nd place at 8.20 - only .15 off of the first place finisher. Freshman sprinter Eric Escamilla
competed in his first meet of the season and ran a seven flat in the 55 meter dash. Shot-putter Keith Mayfield
had his second-consecutive solid outing finishing fourth in the shotput with a throw of 13.78.
"All of our athletes will continue to get stronger and work on their technique as we gear up for the Hilltop Invitational next Friday and Saturday," finish Alvarado.
