LAMONI, IA – Graceland University women's soccer saw four different players score in the 4-2 victory over Clarke University on a damp, brisk evening.
"It is important to bounce back with a win and positive reaction," said Ozzie White, head women's soccer, "and we did both. We created many chances and enjoyed the Prides share of possession."
The game started almost two hours late due to lightning and rain delays. In just the fourth minute of the game, Clarke moved the ball deep into Graceland territory. CU's Sara Anabardan played a ball to Chelsie Horton at the top of the box to put the Pride up 1-0. Just over a minute later, Graceland answered back.
Kimberly Louiza Ramirez sent a ball in the box, as Bethany Koutsourdis connected on a header into the back of the net. The score 1-1 just five minutes into play.
The game settled down a little bit from their as the team's worked to figure out the playing service and battle for possession. Bailey McNamee found Horton at the top of the box for the second time in the contest. She rifled a shot off her foot, putting Clarke in the lead in the 17th minute of the game.
GU continued to work, and earned a corner kick in the 27th minute of the contest. Hannah Hiner served the ball in the mix. Suzu Sato was on the end of the serve, to tie the game at 2-2. Less than 30 seconds later, Ramirez crossed a ball into box, as Bridget Wyatt crashed the goal on the far post. She headed the ball into the back of the net to move GU ahead 3-2. Graceland continued to lead by the same score at halftime.
After the break, the two teams worked to find their rhythm again, as the defenses made it challenging for their opponents. With about 15 minutes to play in the game, Graceland was given a penalty kick in the box. GU's Megan Kimrey stepped up to take the kick. She converted and gave the Yellowjackets a 4-2 edge. The Jackets continued to push forward, going on to win 4-2 over Clarke University.
