LAMONI, IA- Graceland University defeated Clarke University – a top team in the North division of the Heart of America Athletic Conference – in four sets. Graceland defeated Clarke 25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 25-17.
The teams exchanged points back-and-forth at the start of the first set. Graceland (10-13, 4-9 Heart) took the lead at 10-9 on a kill by Farley. Momentum continued to work in favor of the Jackets as they pushed ahead 18-13. The Jackets continued on to take the first 25-19. The set ended on a kill by Keslie Sickels.
The Yellowjackets started off the second strong, behind the serving of Kacie Miyama. Clarke (23-6, 10-4 Heart) chipped away at the score, tying the set at 6-6. Graceland errors, coupled with kills by Clarke allowed the Pride to obtain a slight edge. The gap swelled to 18-13 favoring Clarke. The Prides momentum continued, and Clarke went on to take the set 25-20.
In the third, the Jackets darted out to a 10-5 lead, earning kills from Megan Kneib and Emma Runyan along the way. Clarke looked to turn the tide, but Graceland maintained their composure. Graceland who ended up taking the third 25-16.
The fourth and final set, saw the Yellowjackets jump out to hold a 9-2 advantage. Momentum continued for the Jackets 15-6, and forcing Clarke to take both their timeouts. The Jackets reached set point at 24-13. Late service aces by Kimberly Diaz, briefly stalled GU. Ultimately, Graceland took the fourth 25-18.
The Yellowjackets hit 0.250 percent as a team in the contest, holding Clarke to 0.122 percent.
The trio of Emma Runyan, Megan Kneib, and Hannah Farley highlighted the Yellowjacket offense, producing 14, 12, and 11 kills. Runyan and Farley each hit 0.333 percent in the contest. Stephanie Herman led GU setters with 30 assists. Emree Sato contributed 12. Defensively, Graceland received 16 assists from Sydney Steward. Kneib contributed 12, while Miyama added 10.
Clarke was led offensively by Rachel Hunt with nine kills. Kasey Davis, Kayla Budgins, and Michaela Bleeker each added seven. Setting the tempo was Randi Hafner and Taylor Smith with 23 and 15 assists, respectively. Defensively, Ashley smith picked up 27 digs.
Graceland University will take the rest of the week off, continuing at home on Tuesday October 17 at 7p.m. to face Peru State College.
