ATCHISON, KS - Megan Kneib and Emma Runyan combined for 35 kills in Graceland University women's volleyball five-set loss to Benedictine College. The Ravens took the game 13-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-12.
Benedictine has improved to 15-6 overall and 8-5 in the Heart. Graceland has fallen to 9-13 and 3-9 in conference play.
In the first set, Graceland let by four at 11-7 following a kill by Eden Meir. With the Jackets continuing to hold a four-point edge, Graceland scored eight straight to hold a 21-11 advantage. GU claimed the first 25-13.
The Yellowjackets continued to played strong in the second, moving ahead 9-5. BC took the lead at 11-10, before GU regained the advantage at 14-11. Later in the game, a kill by Sickels put Graceland ahead 22-15. The Jackets closed the set to win 25-18.
The Ravens looked to switch the momentum of the match in the third set. Midway through the set, BC held a three-point edge at 15-12. Graceland continued to trail the rest of the way, falling 25-17.
During the fourth, the Jackets quickly moved ahead 11-6. GU led for a good portion of the set, before BC battled to tie the set at 18-18. The Ravens took the lead at 21-20 and went on to score the next four points. BC won the fourth 25-20.
In the fifth and final set, Graceland fell behind early at 11-6 in favor Benedictine. GU worked to cut the deficit to two at 13-11, but ultimately fell 15-12.
Three players reached double-figure kills in the match. Megan Kneib highlighted the Jackets with 18 kills. Emmay Runyan followed closely behind with 17 kills. Complimenting Kneib and Runyan was Keslie Sickels with 12 kills. Sickels hit 0.360 percent in the game. Stephanie Herman marked 38 assists, as Emree Sato added 12 assists. Defensively, Sydney Stewart recorded 18, as Kneib added 17.
Benedictine was led by Fleur Wsselink with 13 kills. Also reached double-figure kills was Sara Rahmanzai and Sofi Thomas with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Taylor Garner set the tempo, dishing out 37 assists. Four players tabbed 10+ digs in the game with Haley Cochran leading the way with 15 digs.
Women's volleyball will play next at home against Clarke University on Tuesday, October 10 at 7:30 p.m.
