Olathe, KS- Graceland University fell to the MidAmerica Pioneers (13-8, 8-4) after a battle in four sets. The game ended 25-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17, as the Jackets were able to sneak by with a set.
Starting off the first set, the Pioneers (9-12, 3-8 Heart) went on a run. MNU broke away and took the early lead at 5-2.The lead swelled to 19-12 in favor of MNU. Graceland erros paired with MidAmerica Nazarene kills pushed the momentum in favor of the Pioneers. MidAmerica went on to take the first 25-15.
The start of the second set was much closer than the first, as both the Jackets and the Pioneers exchanged points evenly. With the score tied at 18-18, MidAmerica Nazarene took off on a run. The Pioneers closed the set outscoring the Jackets 7-2 to win 25-20.
Once again, things got off to an even start in the third set. However, this time, it was GU that went on a run moving ahead 13-7. A pair of kills by Megan Kneib capped the run. MNU worked to cut the deficit to two multiple times. However, Graceland maintained composure, and held on to take the third 25-23.
In the fourth and final set, Graceland moved ahead 5-2. Soon the score was tied at 7-7. Momentum then swung in favor of MidAmerica as the Pioneers moved ahead 20-12. Graceland was unable to overcome the deficit, falling 25-17.
Graceland was led by Kneib with 13 kills. Complimenting her was Hannah Farley and MacKenzie Edmundson who both contributed eight apiece. The setting duties were shared by Emree Sato and Sam Schell with 22 and 11 assists, respectively. Defensively, Sydney Stewart recorded 13 digs, while Schell added 10.
MidAmerica Nazaren's offense was led by Eugenia Ayzaguer with 11 kills. The offensive tempo was set by Hannah Bettge with 32 assists. Defensively, Gabriella Stazzeri recorded 16 digs, while Ayzaguer marked 12 digs.
Graceland continues on the road on Saturday, October 7 at Benedictine College. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m. in Atchison, KS.
