Lamoni, IA- Graceland University women's volleyball defeats Heart of America Athletic Conference foe Avila University 25-21, 15-25, 19-25, 25-18, 16-14.
The first set was a game of serving, as both teams took turns going on runs. To start, Keslie Sickles of the Jackets went on a run, producing two aces early on. Stephanie Herman added a run of her own right shortly after. A kill from AU's Laurel Dehn directly followed by a service run closed gap to 21-17, still favoring the Jackets. This was not enough for the Eagles, as Graceland walked away with the win 25-21.
At the start of the second, things did not go as smoothly for either team, as both began with a slow start. An ace by Graceland's Sam Schell followed by a nice setter dump from Stephanie Herman set the ball rolling. Graceland and Avila exchanged errors for the duration of the match. Two big blocks from Avila's Connie Boldridge and Paige Rackers, shifted the momentum. Avila took advantage of late Graceland errors, and the Eagles took the second set 25-15.
Following closely in path of the second set, the third looked much the same. Avila moved ahead 10-7 putting the ball away and used momentum gained from GU errors. Graceland went on a run led by Keslie Sickles with the serve, bringing the scores 13-all. Late in the game with the Jackets trailing, an ace by Sam Schell set helped momentum to find its way back to Graceland, but it was too late. The Eagles won the third 25-19.
The Eagles and the Jackets evenly exchanged points until errors began to prove costly for Graceland. Avila took off to take the lead by putting the ball away and serving aggressively. A nice roll shot to the middle by GU's Emma Runyan woke the Jackets up. Graceland went on a run of their own, and took advantage of errors by the Eagles. GU tied the set at 16-16. Kacie Miyama of Graceland went on a serving run, as the Jackets took over. After slow start, GU took the set 25-18 with a beautiful kill by Beth Presler.
A pair of kills by Presler started things off strongly for the Jackets in the fifth. AU's Elli Wright then stepped to the service line, leading the Eagles on a run that gave them a 5-2 advantage. AU led at 8-6 before Graceland turned the tide. A service ace by Sickels followed by a kill from Kneib gave Graceland a 12-11 lead. Despite the score being tied at 14-14. Graceland held on to win the fifth 16-14.
Gracend's offense saw two player produced 10+ kills in the match. Emma Runyan led the Jackets with 14 kills, as Megan Kneib contributed 10. Setters Emree Sato and Stephanie Herman combined for 31 assists, as Sam Schell added nine. Defensively, Sydney Stewart recorded 23 digs. Sato added 17 digs in the match.
The Eagle offense was highlighted by Laurell Dehl with 11 kills. Elli Wright and Paige Rackers added 10 each, while Corrine Boldridge contributed nine. Dani Carlson dished out 39 assists. Defensively, AU accumulated 78 digs. Wright, Lindsey Butler and Cydney Newton totaled 19, 15, and 13, respectively.
Graceland continues at home on October 3rd at 7:30 pm against Grand View.
