CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – Graceland University was swept Tuesday evening by Mount Mercy University 25-15, 27-25, 25-18.
Graceland dropped to 8-9 overall and 2-5 in conference play. Mount Mercy improved to 9-8 overall and 4-4 in the Heart.
"Mount Mercy is a quality team," remarked Stew McDole, head women's volleyball coach. "They have solid personnel all-around and to compete, we need to execute continuously. We have been up and down recently as a team and that have been our biggest challenge."
In the first set, Mount Mercy held a two-point edge early on a 5-3. Graceland took over a couple points later a 7-6 on a service ace by Stephanie Herman. Momentum swung towards MMU with a 10-2 run, as the Mustangs jumped ahead to lead a 16-9. GU was unable to recover from the deficit, falling 25-15 in the first.
Graceland held a 9-7 advantage following a Keslie Sickels kill in the second set. GU continued to hold the upper hand over MMU, extending the lead to four-points at 19-15 with a Mustang error. Mount Mercy tied the set at 20-20, before Graceland worked to reach set point at 24-22. Unable to put the game away, Mount Mercy outscored Graceland 5-1 to close the set and take the second 27-25.
Momentum continued to go Mount Mercy's way in the third and final set of the match. The Mustangs quickly moved ahead 8-2, counting six kills in the run. Back-to-back kills by GU's Megan Kneib and Tiffany Brunner to bring the score to 15-8 in favor of MMU. The margin was too great, with the Jackets falling 25-18 in the third.
In the match, Mount Mercy hit 0.273 percent, holding Graceland to 0.059 percent. The Yellowjackets offense was led by Emma Runyan with eight kills, while Hannah Farley added seven. Stephanie Herman and Emree Sato combined for 23 assists, as Sam Schell added six. Defensively, Sydney Stewart marked 13 digs.
Mount Mercy was led by Maddie Bell and Olivia Coe with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Dishing out of assists on the night was Kayla Daggett with 34. Defensively, Becca Thomas and Alyssa Weldon tabbed 13 dig apiece. Vik Meade added five block assists and one solo block.
