LAMONI, IA – Junior quarterback Preston Compton threw for a career high and new school record, 501 yards, in Graceland University's 39-32 win over Central Methodist University in the Heart of America Athletic Conference game of the week, broadcasted on ESPN 3.
With 4:24 left to play in the game, Central Methodist (1-4) scored a 13-yard rushing touchdown to take the lead at 32-31. With their backs against the wall, Graceland (1-4) worked the ball down the field and took advantage of CMU penalties. The Jackets moved the ball to the one-yard line, and on the next play, Preston Compton threw deep to the corner to find freshman wide receiver Caleb Thomas to take the lead. Freshman kicker Darnel Uran sent his extra point through the uprights, as GU led 39-32 with 12 seconds to play. Graceland's Tyberius Horne intercepted CMU on their final play of the game as the Jackets won 39-32.
Head Graceland University football coach Marc Kolb, who earned his first victory as a head coach said, "It was a great win today! We played very well early and started to relax in the second half. Fortunately, we rallied to finish the game with two big plays to win."
Graceland University opened the game strong, moving the ball down the field. The Jackets used eight plays to score on the first drive of the game. Compton found Thomas in the end zone on a 20-yard pass and Uran converted on the PAT, as GU led 7-0 just minutes into the game.
Then early in CMU's possession, sophomore defensive back Jeff Sanders intercepted CMU's Caleb Bedford to give Graceland the ball back on their own 46. Again, Graceland worked the ball down the field and were knocking on the door of the end zone. In the end, Uran kicked a 21-yard field goal to give the Jackets a 10-0 lead. GU was up by the same margin after the first.
Early in the second quarter, Graceland's defensive came up with their second interception of the game. Junior defensive back Mike Pierre counted his third interception of the season. He returned the ball to the endzone, but the score was called off due to a penalty. GU then began their drive on Central Methodist's 29. Following a loss of yards, Compton sent a ball to Taz Richardson who caught the 41-yard pass for a touchdown. With the extra point good, Graceland held a 17-0 advantage with 12:14 to play in the second.
Late in the first half, a punt return by Senior Deion Betts gave the Jackets good field position. GU took full advantage. A long catch by Richardson, allowed Compton to convert on a one-yard rushing TD. At the break Graceland led Central Methodist 24-0.
Following halftime, Central Methodist put themselves on the board with an 18-yard passing TD. Unable to convert on the PAT, CMU trailed 24-6. The Jackets then went and responded with their own score. Central Methodist counted another score before the end of the quarter, as the two-point conversion was unsuccessful (31-12).
