FAYETTE, MO – Graceland University suffered a 45-13 loss to No. 12 Missouri Valley College on the road.
The loss places Graceland at 0-3, while Missouri Valley moved to 1-2.
" We started out with great energy tonight, but have to keep it going the full 60 minutes," said Marc Kolb, head coach.
Graceland's opening drive of the night was quick as Preston Compton connected with David Holland on a 62-yard touch down pass to move ahead just over a minute into the game. Graceland led 6-0.
The Yellowjacket defense kept Missouri Valley at bay for the majority of the first quarter. Missouri Valley began a drive at Graceland's 48-yard line. After moving down the field, MVC took the lead with 3:11 on the clock following a touchdown reception and PAT. After the first quarter GU trailed MVC 7-6.
During Graceland's first drive of the second half, Compton connected with Holland on a 49-yard catch to place the Jackets on the MVC 22. Caleb Thomas then caught a 12-yard pass. Later in the drive, Compton found Thomas on a seven-yard touch down. Darnel Uran's PAT sailed through the uprights to take a 13-7 lead early in the second quarter.
Missouri Valley answered back with their own score on the next possession to regain the lead at 14-13. Before the end of the half, MVC would score two more times and force an interception. Graceland trailed 28-13 at the break.
Following halftime, Mike Pierre forced a fumble, which was recovered by the Vikings. MVC regrouped and extended the margin to 35-13 just minutes into the half.
Graceland's defense forced a field goal later in the quarter after Missouri Valley was knocking on the Jacket door again. The score 38-13.
The Yellowjacket offense was kept quiet by the Vikings in the third, as the Jackets defense forced another fumble, but were unable to steal it away from MVC. After three quarters, MVC led 38-13.
Early in the fourth quarter, Pierre pulled down his second interception of the night. Throughout the fourth, Compton connected with various receivers on different drives, as the Viking defense kept the Jackets out of the end zone. Graceland fell to Missouri Valley 45-13.
Graceland produced 329 yards of total offense to Missouri Valleys 559 yards. The Yellowjackets marked 289 yards in the air and were limited to just 40 yards on the ground. Graceland's defense forced two interceptions.
Quarterback Preston Compton compiled 286 with a long of 72 yards. Caleb Thomas and David Holland tabbed 135 and 121 yards, respectively. Thomas caught 16 passes, while Holland caught two including a 72-yard reception.
Graceland's defense forced three fumbles and two interceptions. Mitrione Smith made eight tackles, while Askia Harris and Deion Betts added seven each. Mike Pierre brought down both interceptions for a total of 38 yards.
Football will continue on the road, traveling to No. 2 Baker University on Saturday, September 16 at 1 p.m.
