LAMONI, IA - Hannah Hiner scored on a free kick in overtime to give Graceland University a 2-1 win over Concordia University (NE).
The victory improves Graceland to 4-0-1 on the season, while Concordia dropped to 4-2-1.
Graceland looked to push high at the start of the first half, playing with high intensity and pressing Concordia's back line. The Jackets worked the ball deep into the Bulldogs end, tabbing four shots in the opening 15 minutes of the game. The two teams worked back-and-forth as trying to break down each others defense. In the final minute of the half, Manaia Siania Unutoato made a key save to keep the game scoreless at the break.
After halftime, Graceland came out slow, as Concordia picked up the intensity and urgency. Over the first 30 minutes of the second half, CU outshot GU 9-3, testing Graceland's goalkeeper. The Jackets countered in the 82 minute of the contest. Megan Kimrey found Soleya Figueroa who placed the ball past the keeper to move ahead 1-0. Less then four minutes later, Concordia drew a foul outside the box. Jeannelle Condame knocked a knuckle ball to the right upper 90 to even the score with just five minutes remaining. The game remained tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation, forcing overtime.
In overtime, the Jackets drew a foul just outside the 18 yard box. Hannah Hiner stepped up to the ball, bending the ball into the lower left corner of the goal. Graceland defeated Concordia 2-1.
"A game of two halves tonight," said Ozzie White, head coach. " I thought that we played very well in the first half and dominated possession and chances. Concordia had good moments in the second half and we needed Manaia Siania Unutoa to make two fantastic saves to keep us in teh contest. In the end, we showed a lot of guts to grind out a really important result to keep the run going."
Concordia outshot Graceland 18-10 in the contest, with the Bulldogs put 11 shots on target to the Jackets 5. Soleya Figueroa and Hannah Hiner each counted a goal in the win, as both players only took one shot the entire game. Goalkeeper Manaia Siania Unutoa recorded 10 saves in the game.
The women's soccer team will next travel to Kansas Wesleyan University on Tuesday, September 12 for the final non-conference game of the season.
